Ffynnon Wnda
Date Added: 5th Sep 2015
Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: Wales (Pembrokeshire)
Visited: Yes on 4th Sep 2015

Ffynnon Wnda submitted by PAB on 4th Sep 2015. Ffynnon Wnda, in June 2011. At this stage, the well wasn't as obscured as shown in rogerkread's photos from July 2015. His photos showed it looking so sad that I looked back at my earlier ones.
It's a bit worrying if it's now being looked after, as it is such a lovely setting.

Bedd yr Afanc submitted by PAB on 19th Mar 2021. Bedd yr Afanc passage grave, not the most impressive example in itself, but located in a very impressive setting, and within an easy walk from where we were camping, always a bonus!

Country: Wales (Powys)
Visited: Yes on 10th Mar 2007

Rhos Y Beddau (Circle) submitted by pab on 10th Mar 2007. Along with Shopshire Traveller's and COFLEIN's descriptions, this picture taken in Aug 2006 may help Portal visitors locate the site - but I have to admit I went to see the waterfall, not knowing what other gems were nearby!

Sgwd Gwladus Stone
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Natural Stone / Erratic / Other Natural Feature
Country: Wales (Powys)
Visited: Yes on 12th Mar 2007

Sgwd Gwladus Stone submitted by pab on 12th Mar 2007. Sgwd Gwladus Stone.
This magnificent stone is above the Sgwd Gwladus waterfall.
It does not seem to be the 'Logan' or Rocking Stone shown on the OS Map - at least, we couldn't get this one to rock! It therefore seem to justify a mention in its own right.

Coed Ynys Faen
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Standing Stones
Country: Wales (Powys)
Visited: Yes on 11th Apr 2007

Coed Ynys Faen submitted by pab on 11th Apr 2007. Coed Ynys-faen, Stone 2, with track above.
After a very difficult clamber through the bracken and brambles on the steep hillside above the road, this stone was visible roughly in the position next to the track on the RCAHMW map for Stone 2. It was obvious that constructing the track above it had caused so much material to be displaced that it was almost completely covered.
I doubt whether it would be possible to get through most of the year - I happened to be there after a dry spell, be...

Newbridge on Wye
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: Wales (Powys)
Visited: Yes on 12th Apr 2007

Newbridge on Wye submitted by pab on 12th Apr 2007. Newbridge-on-Wye: Pen y bont Standing Stone.
Stopped at this today, 12 April 2007, and it seems to have settled slightly since Shropshire Traveller's picture in 2005. It is difficult to be absolutely sure, but the angle of the holes on this face certainly seem slightly more acute, and the surrounding ground is definitely showing the signs of livestock using it for shelter.
RCAHMW reports it as having been found in a hedge in about 1910, so perhaps it was moved to its current location ...

Cerrig Duon stone circle
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: Wales (Powys)
Visited: Yes on 2nd Jan 2008

Cerrig Duon stone circle submitted by pab on 2nd Jan 2008. Newly split stones. Just north of Cerrig Duon, there are many split and/or splitting stones scattered around. Fascinated (but not very knowledgeable) as I am by geology, I particularly liked this one which had obviously come apart fairly recently, as the 2 parts fitted together perfectly.
I assume that the severe temperature changes up here mean that frost can get into the layers in the sedimentary rocks and eventually erode & split them apart? This one was about 1m long, in a stream near...

Llyn y Fan Fawr
Date Added: 18th Sep 2010
Site Type: Standing Stones
Country: Wales (Powys)
Visited: Yes on 20th Apr 2008

Llyn y Fan Fawr submitted by pab on 20th Apr 2008. Line of harder rock is clearly visible in this picture (Feb 08) a quarter of the way down Carmarthen Fan northern slope.
When the ice retreated north from the Beacons, much of this material will have been deposited on the lower levels - presumably it will have withstood erosion down there in the same way as it has on the slopes?
Will this not explain the many layered stones doted around north of the ridges?

Drygarn Fawr submitted by pab on 19th Oct 2008. Quartz topping to the eastern cairn.
Visible for miles when the sun is on it - beautiful place, but the warnings by kiri and others about boggy ground are certainly justified.

Carreg Bica Cairn
Date Added: 29th Dec 2010
Site Type: Round Cairn
Country: Wales (Powys)
Visited: Yes on 5th Oct 2010

Carreg Bica Cairn submitted by PAB on 5th Oct 2010. Carreg Bica - general view, looking southeast. The shape of the barrow is clear and striking, providing excellent panoramic views.
The stone cairn is clearly a fairly 'modern' construct - and the marker is one of the boundary markers which go right round the Elan Valley Estate - about 65 miles apparently.
