Cap-Del Pouech dolmen

Cap-Del Pouech dolmen submitted by thecaptain on 13th Dec 2003. Cap-Del Pouech dolmen near Mas D'Azil, Ariege, southwest France. I am not 100% sure whether this is the Cap del Pouech dolmen or another. I parked at the Southern entrance to the cave and followed a marked walking trail up and over the hill above the cave, following signs to the dolmen. There were other dolmens signposted in the area.

Dolmen de Peyré (Sabarat)

Dolmen de Peyré (Sabarat) submitted by NickyD on 14th Aug 2015. The Dolmen was a little tricky to find (the signposts only went so far!). It was up a grassy strip of land, hidden amoungst the undergrowth and trees. Image copyright: stonesearcher, hosted on Flickr and displayed under the terms of their API.

Coed Ynys Faen

Coed Ynys Faen submitted by pab on 12th Apr 2007. Coed Ynys-faen, Stone 2or3, embedded in bank. This close-up of the stone in the bank of the track shows it to be remarkably intact and erect considering the proximity of the Forestry track - but perhaps I am being unduly cynical The height from earth to top on the outer face was approx 1.1m. RCAHMW described Stone 2 as "An erect monolith, 0.84m high by 0.64m by 0.51m, possibly destroyed by falling trees" in 1981, so it would be an amazing rediscovery and recovery for the stone in the p...

Long Stone (Minchinhampton)

Long Stone (Minchinhampton) submitted by TimPrevett on 30th Dec 2009. Sunset 26/12/09 - an unplanned visit to a number of sites in the area. No maps - just a vague 1970s guidebook - took us a couple hours to locate this having gone from Minchinhampton via Hampton Fields to Tetbury to Avening missing the stone at first by a narrow margin. Having resigned ourselves to a long barrow this stone was spotted with just a few minutes before the sun went below the horizon. A very impressive 7 feet tall stone, and make sure to see the smaller stone bisecting the wall ...

Grotte de Mas D'Azil

Grotte de Mas D'Azil submitted by thecaptain on 13th Dec 2003. The southern, upstream, entrance to the magnificent cave at Mas D'Azil, Ariege, southwest France. The river takes a shortcut through the hillside here, and has created a massive cave, which is so big that a fairly large road also runs through the cave. Within this cave were found signs of life going back tens of thousands of years, and indeed the world famous Faon aux Oiseaux spear thrower. The finds here gave the name Azilian to an entire prehistoric culture.
