Grotte de Mas D'Azil
Date Added: 15th Aug 2015
Site Type: Cave or Rock Shelter
Country: France (Midi:Ariège (09))
Visited: Yes on 1st Jul 2013. My rating: Condition 5 Ambience 4 Access 5

Grotte de Mas D'Azil submitted by thecaptain on 13th Dec 2003. The southern, upstream, entrance to the magnificent cave at Mas D'Azil, Ariege, southwest France.
The river takes a shortcut through the hillside here, and has created a massive cave, which is so big that a fairly large road also runs through the cave.
Within this cave were found signs of life going back tens of thousands of years, and indeed the world famous Faon aux Oiseaux spear thrower. The finds here gave the name Azilian to an entire prehistoric culture.

This magnificent standing stone lives beside the busy A40 just inside the entrance to the Welsh Brigade army camp just to the south of Crickhowell. Over 4 metres high, “The Growing Stone” looks most impressive, and has a pleasant grass and trees area around it.

Long Stone (Minchinhampton)
Date Added: 14th Aug 2015
Site Type: Standing Stones
Country: England (Gloucestershire)
Visited: Yes on 1st Nov 2013. My rating: Access 5
Long Stone (Minchinhampton) submitted by TimPrevett on 30th Dec 2009. Sunset 26/12/09 - an unplanned visit to a number of sites in the area.
No maps - just a vague 1970s guidebook - took us a couple hours to locate this having gone from Minchinhampton via Hampton Fields to Tetbury to Avening missing the stone at first by a narrow margin.
Having resigned ourselves to a long barrow this stone was spotted with just a few minutes before the sun went below the horizon.
A very impressive 7 feet tall stone, and make sure to see the smaller stone bisecting the wall ...

Coed Ynys Faen

Coed Ynys Faen submitted by pab on 12th Apr 2007. Coed Ynys-faen, Stone 2or3, embedded in bank.
This close-up of the stone in the bank of the track shows it to be remarkably intact and erect considering the proximity of the Forestry track - but perhaps I am being unduly cynical
The height from earth to top on the outer face was approx 1.1m. RCAHMW described Stone 2 as "An erect monolith, 0.84m high by 0.64m by 0.51m, possibly destroyed by falling trees" in 1981, so it would be an amazing rediscovery and recovery for the stone in the p...
