The Gallarus Oratory

The Gallarus Oratory submitted by swatson on 22nd Jul 2004. History Gallery The enigmatic Gallarus Oratory on the Dingle Peninsula, Co. Kerry, Ireland. The date of it's construction is a matter for debate: some scholars put it around 600AD and others as late as 1200AD. Not pre-historic, but interesting.

Memphis Museum Ramses II

Memphis Museum Ramses II submitted by AlexHunger on 26th Mar 2006. The Memphis museum, near Sakkara has a collection of statues and stelles, including a 13 meter limestone statue of Ramses II. Memphis was the Old Kingdom capital of Egypt. It then declined and only came back to prominence under Ramses. Currently, the area is largely rural and agricultural and artifacts are discovered on occasion during building works.

Sakkara Pyramid

Sakkara Pyramid submitted by AlexHunger on 26th Mar 2006. The world's first large stone structure built under Pharao Djoser founder of the 3rd Dynasty of the Old Kingdom. Under the Architect Imhotep, the original small mastaba was expanded in all directions to a height of 62 Meters, a length of 123 Meters and a width of 107 Meters. The stone blocks are much smaller than those of the later pyramids. The pyramid had a casing eventually, though this is now lost. There are numerous passages under the pyramids where a mummified leg bone of Djoser was ...

Khafre's Pyramid

Khafre's Pyramid submitted by Thorgrim on 13th Feb 2005. The most awesome experience is to enter the Pyramid of Khafre at Giza. Is it just a coincidence that Giza is located exactly 30 degrees and zero minutes from the equator? (Cairo is 30 degrees 1 minute North) Just think about it - some time before 2,500 BC, the Egyptians of the Old Kingdom placed the Sphinx and the great pyramids exactly one third of the way up from the equator and two thirds of the way down from the north pole. With all that space to go at - it must have been deliberate and pro...

Great Sphinx submitted by AlexHunger on 26th Mar 2006. Egyptologists generally claim that the Sphinx has the face of Khafre, while others claim the rock formation is much older. The Egyptian authorities are about to start a refurbishment of the neck, shoulder and breast area, hence the scaffolding.

In the centre of the mound there was a stone lined cist containing an inhumation burial and the cape was found on the shoulders of the skeleton, pieces of sheet bronze were also recovered which may have formed a backing to the gold cape. Additionally in the grave were numerous amber beads, some estimates put the number of bea...
