Oldendorfer Fuhrenkamp (2)
Date Added: 19th Mar 2012
Site Type: Chambered Tomb
Country: Germany (Lower Saxony, Bremen)
Visited: Yes on 25th Feb 2011

Oldendorfer Fuhrenkamp (2) submitted by Martin_L on 25th Feb 2011. The barrow viewed from the South. Still up to 2m high.
Judging from the size of the slightly oval barrows' remains this chamber originally was approximately 10m long and oriented West-East. I estimate it had five capstones. Only 4 orthostats are preserved: The eastern chamber end orthostat and one adjacent orthostat of each long side. When Sprockhoff et al. examined the site there was another orthostat in situ at position N3 (counting from the East). Nowadays this is not visible anymore,...

Werpeloh Steingrab 5
Date Added: 19th Mar 2012
Site Type: Chambered Tomb
Country: Germany (Lower Saxony, Bremen)
Visited: Yes on 22nd Mar 2011

Werpeloh Steingrab 5 submitted by Martin_L on 22nd Mar 2011. Werpeloh V viewed from the East.
Chamber measuring appr. 6m by 3,2m [1]. It is halfway exposed, the dry-walling is robbed, but all ortostats are preserved and in situ, except for the western entrance orthostat (EW). The 3 capstones collapsed into the chamber (C1-C3). The chamber probably had a more unusual entrance in the South consisting of two orthostats (EW and EW) set slightly inwards beside the orthostats W3 and E3. In contrast Werpeloh IV just 12m to the West is a classic passage grav...

NE long side:
One orthos...

Especially the chambers' capstones are largely destroyed by explosives. Eight orthostats of each long side are preserved, but as the chambers' narrow sides are lost the original length cannot be determined without data from excavation. Length of the chamber was at least 14,5m.

A fragment of the first (counting from the NW) capstone visible between the orthostats at photos' centre. The massive second capstone slipped off its orthostats as a result of the destruction attempts which as usual included the removal of all intermediate stones and the drywalling.

The remains of this largely destroyed megalithic tomb were discovered in 1947 and examined by van Giffen et al. . According to their research the chamber originally measured approximately 6m by 3,3m.
Chamber type is unknown, but passage graves are the most common type in this area. Nowadays there is one larger stone visible inside a deep oval pit. Site is not signposted and there is no path leading to it (La...

Site Type: Cave or Rock Shelter
Country: Germany (North Rhine-Westphalia)
Visited: Yes on 23rd Aug 2011

Volkringhauser Höhle submitted by Martin_L on 23rd Aug 2011. The entrance is 5m wide and up to 3m high. After only 5m the cave ends in two small passages filled up with silt.
Obviously Volkringhauser cave was already used in prehistoric times. Several findings (tools from bone, flint and lydite) from stone age (Mousterien and/or Acheuleen) prove this. Examined by Brandt, Andree et al. in 1928.
