Devil's Ring and Finger

Devil's Ring and Finger submitted by Paul Morgan on 25th Jul 2001. This site is all that remains of a long cairn. The Devil's Ring is a perforated septal stone similar to the one at the Bridestones in Cheshire. The Finger was, perhaps, a portal stone. Neither are in their original position. Located near Mucklestone, Staffordshire and marked on OS map 127.

Log Text: Easier to find than I thought. The fact that the stones had been moved from their original location to the field boundary some time in the distant past kind of reflected in the lack of ambience but was still worth the walk to it.. Pleased to say that the barbed wire fences mentioned on other members site logs are now 'down'.

Log Text: Walked up to the hillfort during a visit to Croft Castle (National Trust).

A leaflet was available from the N.T giving directions plus a number of 'points of interest' ie gateways, site of a rectangular structure (granary?),site of a Romano-British structure (Temple/Sanctuary?) but due to the time of year the bracken obscured just about everything, rendering much of the hillfort unrecognisable as such.

I will revisit during the winter months when the 6' plus vegetation has died back!!

Also couldn't locate the spring on this vist - maybe next time.

Composed of weathered sandstone it resembles a huge mushroom or cork. As with the Andle Stone nearby it is covered in graffiti from the 19th and 20th centuries and has steps carved into the side to allow access to the top.

Cefn Coch (Penmaenmawr)

Cefn Coch (Penmaenmawr) submitted by TimPrevett on 7th Apr 2004. This Circle is easily missed. As it is usually approached from Druids' Circle, it is not visible until you actually go over a slight rise just SW of the neighbouring Moelfre Stone Row / Alignment which can be mistaken as 278. When reading descriptions of Circle 278 as a wide circular rubble bank, with fallen uprights, then coming across this (which I have missed on 2 previous visits to this area), it is unmistakeably Circle 278. This is looking to the North East from the bank of Circle 278...

Castle Ring SK045128 Looking E / NE - despite Castle Ring being the highest part of Cannock Chase, the only part with a panoramic view, looks towards (Rugeley?) Power Station! Castle Ring was actually recommended to me by a colleague at work who does not know of my stones / pre-history interest; she grew up in the Cannock area, and given we were making a trip to Stafford anyway, I'd heard that Cannock Chase was supposed to quite nice. Knowing that she grew up there, I asked her if Cannock...

Log Text: Yet another visit to this marvellous place.

At times there is a tangible feel here of 'something else'. There are many stories of sightings here, including Roman legionaires, some sort of 'Bigfoot' and cowled figures.Never seen anything myself but there is cerainly a vibe here!!

One to return to.

Log Text: Been visiting this site now and again for 20 years.

After a gap of approx 5 years i visited again yesterday and was shocked to see how the site has degenerated.

I believe that the site is (was?) managed by Cannock Chase District Council -if this is still the case then they need to get up there quick,to clear back the highly invasive ferns/bracken/scrub that currently is completely overrunning/spoiling the site. The banks/ditches are currently hard to discern over the greater part of the fort. The interior is also a complete mess.

Shame as this site usually has such a great vibe to it. On today's visit you'd be hard pressed to even tell it was a hillfort.
