Stoke Flat submitted by PaulM on 1st Sep 2001. Froggatt Edge stone circle (aka Stoke Flat), Derbyshire GR: SK249768
Froggatt Edge stone circle is set on a flat shelf, overlooking the picturesque Derwent Valley.
Often referred to as Stoke Flat, the site is complex, though now sadly quite ruined. It consists of an embanked stone circle with two entrances exactly opposite, to the north-north-west and south-south-east. Traces of dry-stone walling in the northern entrance suggest that it may have been deliberately blocked at some time in p...

This is a view of the eastern end of the inner ditch and bank, the defended headland being to the right.
This is a smashing place to visit on a nice day, of which this was most definately NOT one.

Log Text: Walked up to the hillfort during a visit to Croft Castle (National Trust).
A leaflet was available from the N.T giving directions plus a number of 'points of interest' ie gateways, site of a rectangular structure (granary?),site of a Romano-British structure (Temple/Sanctuary?) but due to the time of year the bracken obscured just about everything, rendering much of the hillfort unrecognisable as such.
I will revisit during the winter months when the 6' plus vegetation has died back!!
Also couldn't locate the spring on this vist - maybe next time.

Caer Caradoc (Church Stretton) submitted by TimPrevett on 28th Jun 2004. Caer Caradoc, taken from a northwest angle on a lovely summer's morning. Indeed, this offers some formidable defense. If this were the place of Caratacus' last stand against the Romans, this would have indeed been something difficult to conquer, even by Roman standards. However, there is no evidence to confirm this suggestion.

Log Text: Another hillfort i've been meaning to visit for some time - and this time it was worth it!! Stiff climb up there, but worth the effort.I don't subscribe to the view that this was the site of Caratacus's last stand but i'm sure that he would have visited this hillfort - a site which must have been used a garrison/forward base against the Romans at Virconium.

Nordy Bank submitted by TimPrevett on 5th May 2005. Towards the end of my visit here, three men arrived and spent considerable time debating and pointing upon the NW rampart; they were there so long I had to grab a photo to help put the sense of scale to the place.

Amazing views - you can see why the hillfort was built here.
Shame that the rampart has been quarried into, but it was still good to visit a hillfort that's not covered by trees!
The Wrekin
Date Added: 1st Aug 2017
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 6th May 2017. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 3 Access 3
The Wrekin submitted by TimPrevett on 2nd Jan 2005. Lookin to the North East, between the outer and inner ramparts of The Wrekin.
The path enters the inturned ramparts to the central area; the trig point and toposcope sit upon a Bronze Age Cairn, which is hardly in evidence.
Another, more slight rampart is visible to the left of the picture, before the hill becomes more rounded.

Date Added: 1st Nov 2018
Site Type: Round Barrow(s)
Country: England (Shropshire)
Visited: Yes on 27th Oct 2018. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 3 Access 5
Welshampton Bowl Barrow submitted by TimPrevett on 15th Jan 2005. The barrow adjoining the road in Welshampton; impressive stature - shame about the road cutting it in half, and the telegraph pole!
A good view into the enclosure, and idea of the surrounding countryside is possible by standing on the bank above the pavement. Snowdrops were growing on the barrow today (Sat 15th Jan 2005); an encouraging sign of the life stirring in the ground again.

Walked the inner ditch on SE and SW sides.Massive inner rampart
No ditch or rampart on other two sides due to it being a 'promontary fort' Therefore due to the terrain,no defences were needed at the NW and NE sides.

Looking E / NE - despite Castle Ring being the highest part of Cannock Chase, the only part with a panoramic view, looks towards (Rugeley?) Power Station!
Castle Ring was actually recommended to me by a colleague at work who does not know of my stones / pre-history interest; she grew up in the Cannock area, and given we were making a trip to Stafford anyway, I'd heard that Cannock Chase was supposed to quite nice. Knowing that she grew up there, I
asked her if Cannock...

At times there is a tangible feel here of 'something else'. There are many stories of sightings here, including Roman legionaires, some sort of 'Bigfoot' and cowled figures.Never seen anything myself but there is cerainly a vibe here!!
One to return to.
