Ardvannie

Ardvannie submitted by markj99 on 2nd Apr 2021. Structural remnants of the chamber on Ardvannie Cairn.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Ardvannie Cairn is a forgotten cairn despite its proximity to the A836. I doubt many people visit and nature is slowly enveloping the remains.

Avielochan

Date Added: 18th Apr 2021
Site Type: Chambered Tomb Country: Scotland (Highlands)
Visited: Yes on 20th Mar 2012. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 3

Avielochan

Avielochan submitted by cosmic on 25th Sep 2006. Chamber from North.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Avielochan Clava Cairn is sandwiched between the A95 and the railway line. Despite this the site has a peaceful ambience, promoted by the ring of mature trees which surround the cairn. The kerb is delineated by c. 10 trees and intermittent large stones. The interior has been robbed out exposing a stone lined passage to a central chamber.
I prefer this somewhat neglected Clava cairn to the over-restored cairns at Balnuaran.

Aviemore

Date Added: 18th Apr 2021
Site Type: Stone Circle Country: Scotland (Highlands)
Visited: Yes on 3rd Jan 2004. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 3 Access 5

Aviemore

Aviemore submitted by steveco on 24th Feb 2002. Aviemore Ring Cairn NH897134. The surviving parts of a Cairn & Stone Circle in the Ski resort of Aviemore.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: I appreciate that conserving the circle in some way is better than removing it, however, surrounding the circle by a modern housing estate has negated any air of antiquity that the stone circle may have possessed.

Cawdor

Date Added: 12th May 2021
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir) Country: Scotland (Highlands)
Visited: Yes on 23rd Mar 2012. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3 Access 4

Cawdor

Cawdor submitted by Cosmic on 11th Nov 2003. Standing stone in a field at NH857508. It was near the end of the day so didn't get out to inspect - photos taken from road to the West.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Cawdor Stone was easy to visit but couldn't be accessed closely due to the field being in crop at my time of visit. Fortunately the stone is relatively close to the edge of the field for photographic purposes.

Balvraid Chambered Cairn

Date Added: 12th May 2021
Site Type: Chambered Cairn Country: Scotland (Highlands)
Visited: Yes on 13th Aug 2011. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 4

Balvraid Chambered Cairn

Balvraid Chambered Cairn submitted by uisdean on 25th Feb 2007. NG845166 Bavraid Chambered Cairn. Rge capstone and chamber
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: When visiting Dun Telve and Dun Troddan most people turn around but if you continue c. 1 mile to the end of the road you will drive past Balvraid Chambered Cairn and reach a path to Dun Grugaig. Balvraid Chambered Cairn is a robbed chambered cairn with a large capstone and exposed chamber.

Achlochan Broch

Date Added: 24th Dec 2022
Site Type: Broch or Nuraghe Country: Scotland (Highlands)
Visited: Yes on 28th Jul 2015. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 3 Access 3

Achlochan Broch

Achlochan Broch submitted by markj99 on 17th Jan 2021. A preserved arc of interior wall in Achlochan Broch.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: I was disappointed by the scant remains of Achlochan Broch. Only diehard broch fans need to visit this much reduced site.

Guidebest

Date Added: 19th May 2024
Site Type: Stone Circle Country: Scotland (Highlands)
Visited: Yes on 25th Jun 2014. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 4 Access 3

Guidebest

Guidebest submitted by steveco on 24th Feb 2002. Guidebest Stone Circle ND181351. A GPS was very helpful in finding this one.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: It is difficult to capture Guidebest Stone Circle in one photo due to its scale and the shrubs in the circle. Is it a coincidence that there is a large split stone in the circle, similar to the split stone at Latheron?

Cantraybruich

Date Added: 17th Apr 2025
Site Type: Clava Cairn Country: Scotland (Highlands)
Visited: Yes on 21st Mar 2012. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 3 Access 4

Cantraybruich

Cantraybruich submitted by PeteCrane5 on 2nd Sep 2024. Four of the remain stones of Cantraybruich ... thought to be what's left of a Clava Cairn
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The obvious remains of Cantraybruich Cairn are an arc of several standing stones on the grassy margin in the E corner of a field. It has been speculated that it is a destroyed Clava Cairn. In reality, the site is a jumble of recumbent stones which is difficult to interpret.

Lower Camster Stones

Date Added: 18th Apr 2025
Site Type: Standing Stones Country: Scotland (Highlands)
Visited: Yes on 25th Jun 2014. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 3

Lower Camster Stones

Lower Camster Stones submitted by steveco on 24th Feb 2002. Camster Stone Circle ND260459. Remains of Lower Camster Stone Circle.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Lower Camster Standing Stone are a curious contrast to the Grey Cairns of Camster located c. 1 mile N of the Cairns in flat moorland. The N and S Standing Stones are now dwarfed by Wind Turbines but they still retain a sense of antiquity. The W stone which is adjacent to the road is somewhat less convincing.

Auldearn Stone Row

Date Added: 27th Apr 2025
Site Type: Stone Row / Alignment Country: Scotland (Highlands)
Visited: Yes on 21st Mar 2012. My rating: Condition 1 Ambience 3 Access 3

Auldearn Stone Row

Auldearn Stone Row submitted by SandyG on 3rd Jan 2019. Looking south east along the row. Stone 1 in the foreground, Stone 2 beyond and Stone 3 indicated by the white arrow.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: I manage to locate 3 stones on the SE end of the row, ending on the edge of a private garden. The stones are hidden in trees. I failed to investigate the NW end of the stone row and the cairn. I will rectify this if I return to the area.

Badnabay

Date Added: 27th Apr 2025
Site Type: Chambered Cairn Country: Scotland (Highlands)

Badnabay

Badnabay submitted by markj99 on 14th Sep 2021. Badnabay Chambered Cairn viewed from N, Ben Stack on the horizon.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Badnabay Cairn is located c. 80 yards SW of the A894 on the NC500. It is obscured by moor grass c. 150 yards WNW of Badnabay farm, adjacent to a narrow track leading to Badnabay farm.

Balnuaran of Clava (Stone)

Date Added: 28th Apr 2025
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir) Country: Scotland (Highlands)
Visited: Yes on 2nd Nov 2011. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 4 Access 3

Balnuaran of Clava (Stone)

Balnuaran of Clava (Stone) submitted by Cosmic on 6th Jan 2004. NH758446 Standing stone to East of Balnuaran of Clava Cairns - only about two hundred yards away but not on OS Map. Access is along a long straight country lane (from the East, West end blocked off) that was probably drive way to a big house - trees either side. Stone itself about six feet high.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Canmore suggests that this standing stone is all that remains of a clava cairn. Rather than mourn the loss of a cairn, perhaps it is better to celebrate the survival of a handsome standing stone.

Mains of Clava SE

Date Added: 28th Apr 2025
Site Type: Cairn Country: Scotland (Highlands)
Visited: Yes on 21st Mar 2012. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 4 Access 3

Mains of Clava SE

Mains of Clava SE submitted by markj99 on 20th Dec 2020. The 45 degree SE arc of Mains of Clava SE Cairn consists of 5 stones.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Mains of Clava SE Cairn is located c. 350 yards NE of the Balnuarin of Clava Car Park. The ruined cairn lies c. 15 yards SE of the road in scrubland. The obvious remains of the cairn are a standing stone c. 3 feet high in the centre of 5 stones delineating the SE arc of the cairn.

Balnuaran of Clava E

Date Added: 28th Apr 2025
Site Type: Clava Cairn Country: Scotland (Highlands)
Visited: Yes on 21st Mar 2012. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 4 Access 4

Balnuaran of Clava E

Balnuaran of Clava E submitted by Klingon on 27th Feb 2006. Remains of a destroyed cairn just across the street next to the Clava Cairns.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: The ruinous condition of Balnuaran of Clava E Cairn is a marked contrast of the restored Clava Cairns to the W. Nevertheless, the cairn is worth a short detour. Go through the gate opposite the car park then walk S for c. 45 yards to reach the E arc of Balnuaran of Clava E Cairn. There is a prominent hawthorn tree on the SE perimeter.

Balnuaran of Clava SW

Date Added: 28th Apr 2025
Site Type: Clava Cairn Country: Scotland (Highlands)
Visited: Yes on 2nd Nov 2011. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 4 Access 5

Balnuaran of Clava SW

Balnuaran of Clava SW submitted by Scotaviaimages on 14th Jan 2011. The Easterly cairn from the Cessna camera plane
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: This site has two strikes against it:
1) I hate sites with too many people.
2) I dislike over-restored sites.
Despite these issues the Balnuaran Clava Cairns are quite impressive if you visit out of season.

Balnuaran of Clava Centre

Balnuaran of Clava Kerb Cairn

Date Added: 28th Apr 2025

Balnuaran of Clava Kerb Cairn

Balnuaran of Clava Kerb Cairn submitted by Klingon on 27th Feb 2006.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Balnuaran of Clava Kerb Cairn is the odd one out at Balnauran: the unrestored circle of stones is small and mysterious compared to the restored large Clava Cairns around it.

Rubha Mor

Date Added: 25th May 2025
Site Type: Cairn Country: Scotland (Highlands)

Rubha Mor

Rubha Mor submitted by PeteCrane5 on 17th Feb 2024. The large oval pile of bare stones that is Rubha Mor
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: It is ironic that so many antiquarians have driven past this stony cairn crossing the Ballachulish Bridge to and from Fort William, yet so few have stopped to visit it. The cairn is not particularly impressive but it has good southern views.

Carn Glas

Date Added: 25th May 2025
Site Type: Chambered Cairn Country: Scotland (Highlands)
