Elevation 122 Meters.
East-West orientation.
Egypt was the bread basket of Rome and Trajan was very eager to maintain good relations with the Egyptians when he built this charming enclosure in 105 CE. It was probably used as a resting place for visiting dignitaries. The reliefs show Trajan offering paying his respects to Isis, Osiris and Horus.
This structure was also saved from its watery resting place in the late 70s, well after all the other Nubi...

Site Type: Carving
Country: Egypt (Upper Egypt (South))
Visited: Yes on 26th Apr 2022. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 5
Colossi of Memnon submitted by AlexHunger on 4th Jan 2006. Large colosal statues of Amenhotep III (Father of Akhenaten). They were originaly carved out of one block but suffered greatly during the 27 BCE earthquake which leveled the Palace of Amenhotep II behind them and damaged many other antiquities in Egypt.
Memnon was a charachter in Homer's Illiad. The Romans though it was amusing to rename the colossi as one of them emited a sighing sound at sunrise on account of air excaping from a fissure, which reminded them of this myth.

Deir El Medina Village submitted by AlexHunger on 7th Jan 2006. This is the Village of the workers that built the tombs in the valley of the kings and queens. In the New Kingdom, the pharaos prefered stealth for their tombs and kept tight security on the west bank of the nile. A separate caste of artisans lived there just to built the tombs and no one else was allowed there in order to avoid tomb robbers. Even the Pharao only visited the west bank twice, once to chose the location of his tomb, and once to move in... permanently.
