Grotte de Bernifal

Grotte de Bernifal submitted by TheCaptain on 13th Jan 2011. This cave was discovered in 1905 and contains engravings of humans as well as the more usual animals. It was closed to visitors when I visited in May 2005, but nevertheless it was a nice walk through splendid woodland with a little stream running nearby up to the entrance.

Grotte de Bédeilhac submitted by thecaptain on 14th Feb 2005. Grotte de Bédeilhac, near Tarascon in Ariège, which contains some fine cave art, and sculpted clay figures. A cave of which the entrance is so big, aeroplanes have been built within it during the war, and taken off from within.

Grotte de Bara-Bahau submitted by TheCaptain on 13th Jan 2011. This cave (cave of the bears), which was only discovered in 1951, features many engravings dated to 14000 years ago and also many bear claw marks. Up the hillside and well signposted from Le Bugue it was closed for lunch when I visited!

Great Sphinx submitted by AlexHunger on 26th Mar 2006. Egyptologists generally claim that the Sphinx has the face of Khafre, while others claim the rock formation is much older. The Egyptian authorities are about to start a refurbishment of the neck, shoulder and breast area, hence the scaffolding.

Giza Valley Temple submitted by AlexHunger on 26th Mar 2006. 4th Dynasty Temple next to Great Sphinx and leading up to Khafra's Pyramid via a causeway. The core of the temple is limestone, but the inner and outer blocks are Aswan granite. The hypostyle hall has 16 Collumns.

The entrance is on the right on the photo (the cave on the left is a dead end and presents no drawing) Inside the cave, a great number of buffalos and horses drawings and some engraved drawings. Magdalenian period (about 20.000 BCE) One of the rare prehistoric cave with drawings still open to public.

Derinkuyu Underground City submitted by AlexHunger on 23rd Sep 2007. Room of Cappodacian Underground city datıng to about 1000-800 BCE when Assyrian where troubling the remnants of the Hittites. Later the underground cıties where reused by christians fleeing Roman persecutıons. The shafts go about 45 Meters deep in about 8 levels. In the last 1800 years locals farmers used them for holding sheep and storing grain and wıne.

Deir El Medina Village submitted by AlexHunger on 7th Jan 2006. This is the Village of the workers that built the tombs in the valley of the kings and queens. In the New Kingdom, the pharaos prefered stealth for their tombs and kept tight security on the west bank of the nile. A separate caste of artisans lived there just to built the tombs and no one else was allowed there in order to avoid tomb robbers. Even the Pharao only visited the west bank twice, once to chose the location of his tomb, and once to move in... permanently.
