Kommos
Date Added: 31st Jan 2015
Site Type: Ancient Village or Settlement
Country: Greece (Crete)
Visited: Yes. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 4
Kommos submitted by AlexHunger on 15th Nov 2004. Port of Kommos.
Located on the south central coast of Crete, Kommos supported the Palace of Phaestos and Agia Triada. It would have been ideal to reach trading partners in Tunisia, Libya and Egypt. There is a sandy beach and dunes in front of this port town, as sea levels appear to have changed dramatically in the last 3000 years.
Excavations are on-going, so the site is not accessible, but there is a good view through the fences and it's a lovely place to visit.

Site Type: Ancient Palace
Country: Greece (Crete)
Visited: Yes. My rating: Condition 5 Ambience 4 Access 5
Knossos submitted by Thorgrim on 12th Nov 2004. The Minoan Palace of Knossos, Crete. Dating from the Minoan Bronze Age, the first palace was built around 2000BC and subsequently destroyed by earthquake. This later palace from the Neopalatial period had 1,200 rooms on five levels. In 1450 BC, it too was destroyed in a disaster caused by the volcanic eruption on Thera (Santorini) which destroyed that island and the Minoan civilisation. The restoration is by Sir Arthur Evans who commenced excavation in 1900.

Phourni submitted by AlexHunger on 5th Oct 2004. Phourni Tholos B. This is an earlier construction, ca 2000 BCE, which has since collapsed. It also has a side chamber, but no external passage. Instead it has a round benchlike structure inside the circumference. This may be a useful comparison to the intact Tholos A.

Vathypetro submitted by AlexHunger on 31st Jan 2005. Vathypetro Villa
View from West to East.
The villa's hypostile hall is immediately visible with columns from the tripartite shrine at the end. The area would have been ideals for a wide variety of crops as well as wine. This site represents real quality of life in the Bronze age for those with privileges.
