Derrynafinchin

Derrynafinchin submitted by frogcottage42 on 4th Mar 2010. This is actually a very complete circle, it is so close to the road that two stones have been uprooted and dropped into the circle to allow traffic to pass! A fence bisects the site and the other stones are hidden in the gorse. There is parking nearby

Log Text: I pass close by frequently. Always give acknowledgement to it. A pity it is so close to the tared road and that the gorse encroaches so much. A lovely drive across the mountains from Kilgarvan though.

Derrynablaha

Derrynablaha submitted by frogcottage42 on 20th Mar 2010. This represents the most basic sort of rock art. There are about forty shallow indentations on the top of this slab but they are very weathered.

Log Text: Many examples of rock art from very clear to almost erased/obscured. Large scattered site that is well worth a visit or preferably more than one if you want explore this area.
A superb setting easily accessed initially before requiring rock scrambling and hunting on both sides of the road.

Log Text: I know this site well and am pleased to see it here as it is my first new site addition to Megalithic Portal. Condition is somewhere between 2 and 3. A steep climb up from Bantry Riding (excellent riding centre) but well worth it. The views across Bantry Bay are superb and a climb to the top is well worth it too, if you still have the energy!

Log Text: A superb example of two back to back Court tombs with a central chamber between the two. Access is over a small style at the roadside. Very dry when I visited but the approach to the raised site will probably be very boggy in wet weather. It is possible to park a single car on the opposite side of the road but it would be difficult to pull out again safety due to almost no view of oncoming traffic. Better to park about 600 yards away near what looks like a haulage yard opposite to some houses.

Visited: Would like to visit

Cloghboola Beg

Cloghboola Beg submitted by KenWilliams on 24th May 2006. A very odd and intriguing site, the round arrangement of stones in the background isn't the actual stone circle, its that strange structure in the foreground! This was possibly a five stone circle, the two portals are long slabs forming a passage like entrance. There are at least eight outlying stones including what once must have been a three stone alignment close to the radial circle.
