Beaulieu Heath (East) submitted by JimChampion on 8th Jun 2005. Bowl barrow on Beaulieu Heath East at grid reference SU411036, looking SE at sunset. The stacks of Fawley refinery and the pylons from Calshot power station are a very modern backdrop to this ancient barrow.

Frankenbury
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Hampshire)
Visited: Yes on 10th Jun 2005

Frankenbury submitted by JimChampion on 10th Jun 2005. Looking southeast across the Avon floodplain at the tree-covered Frankenbury promontory. The trees restrict the view from the hillfort, but in Iron Age times the slopes would no doubt have been cleared for an improved view over the valley below.

Ladle Hill

Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Hampshire)
Visited: Yes on 13th Jun 2005

Ladle Hill submitted by JimChampion on 13th Jun 2005. Looking west at the Ladle Hill bell barrow beside the Wayfarer's Walk path on the way up to the hillfort. This scheduled barrow is nearly 20m in diameter and up to 1.6m high. Apparently there was once a saucer barrow on the other side of this barrow, but no visible traces of it remain.

Site Type: Round Barrow(s)
Country: England (Hampshire)
Visited: Yes on 13th Jun 2005

Nuthanger Down submitted by JimChampion on 13th Jun 2005. The Nuthanger Down bowl barrow. The overgrown bell barrow is on the other side. Part of a horse jump is peeking in on the left. We had our lunch here, with excellent views over Hampshire to the south (and possibly the Isle of Wight?).

Flowerdown Barrows
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Barrow Cemetery
Country: England (Hampshire)
Visited: Yes on 14th Jun 2005

Flowerdown Barrows submitted by JimChampion on 14th Jun 2005. A plan of the Flowerdown barrows, courtesy of the English Heritage sign at the site. For the pedants reading this: the written labels on the barrows are the wrong way round (the large one is in fact the disc barrow). I've no idea if the braille labels are also incorrect.

Inkpen Long Barrow
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Long Barrow
Country: England (Berkshire)
Visited: Yes on 24th Jul 2005

Inkpen Long Barrow submitted by JimChampion on 24th Jul 2005. A view of the east end of the barrow against the backdrop of rainclouds on a showery summer afternoon. The macarbe double-gibbet makes the site easy to find from the valley below. The erosion due to people walking the length of the barrow is visible in this picture: the info board says that various measures have been taken to try and limit wear and tear by the visitors to this great viewpoint.

Maiden Castle Barrow Cemetery
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Barrow Cemetery
Country: England (Dorset)
Visited: Yes on 26th Jul 2005

Maiden Castle Barrow Cemetery submitted by JimChampion on 26th Jul 2005. Looking north at the most prominent barrow of the cemetery, from the edge of the Maiden Castle visitors' car park. The barrow can also be seen from the nearby Dorchester by-pass, a few weeks earlier I was passing by and the barrow seemed to be stood amid a sea of blue cornflower.

Zennor Quoit
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Portal Tomb
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 22nd Aug 2005

Zennor Quoit submitted by JimChampion on 22nd Aug 2005. Just before the sun sets behind the granite outcrops of Zennor Hill, the enormous slipped capstone of Zennor Quoit is illuminated with a golden glow. This image is actually a composite of two photos - from this low angle the nearby wall prevented me from going far enough back to get everything in the frame in one go.

Ham Hill stone circle
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Modern Stone Circle etc
Country: England (Somerset)
Visited: Yes on 22nd Aug 2005

Ham Hill stone circle submitted by JimChampion on 22nd Aug 2005. The modern stone circle is surrounded by the old quarry's spoil heaps - this view, looking west, is from on top of one of these heaps. My umbrella-wielding assistant gives an idea of the scale, and an indication of the weather conditions.

Men Scryfa
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Early Christian Sculptured Stone
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 22nd Aug 2005

Men Scryfa submitted by JimChampion on 22nd Aug 2005. The inscribed side of the stone, obliquely illuminated by the setting sun. The inscription stands out reasonably clearly but you'll still need to use your imagination a bit to see "RIALOBRANI CUNOVALI FILI".

Boskednan stone circle
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 22nd Aug 2005

Boskednan stone circle submitted by JimChampion on 22nd Aug 2005. The portal stones illuminated by the last rays of the setting sun. The tallest one (on the left) has a diagonal groove present on this and the opposite side. The holes that the restored stones were raised from have been covered with pegged down foliage, presumably to encourage regrowth on the bare earth.

Gurnard's Head
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Promontory Fort / Cliff Castle
Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 22nd Aug 2005

Gurnard's Head submitted by JimChampion on 22nd Aug 2005. Looking inland (south) towards Treen from high on the rocky outcrop of the Gurnard's Head promontory. The narrowest part of the promontory, and thus the most easily defended, has a ditch and bank with drystone wall. The ends of this are indicated by white arrows, just showing up as a dark line on this bright afternoon.

Country: England (Cornwall)
Visited: Yes on 25th Aug 2005

Tredinney Cairn submitted by JimChampion on 25th Aug 2005. Looking south at the cairn from the footpath across Tredinney Common. In the distance is the ever-present tower of St Buryan's church. Nice enough view from here, but I imagine its a pretty blustery place for most of the year.

Rawlsbury Camp submitted by JimChampion on 8th Oct 2005. September 2005. Looking down at Rawlsbury hillfort from Bulbarrow Hill, in strong midday autumn sunlight. The ramparts follow the contours of the chalk spur that it sits on. In the distance are the tree-covered slopes of Nettlecombe Tout hillfort.

Beaulieu Heath (West)
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Round Barrow(s)
Country: England (Hampshire)
Visited: Yes on 25th Oct 2005

Beaulieu Heath (West) submitted by JimChampion on 25th Oct 2005. The bowl barrow at SU345012, 25m in diameter and about 1m high with no visible ditch. The barrow survived the construction of the Beaulieu airfield on Hatchet Moor in the early 20th century. The airfield buildings have long since been razed, but some of the access roads (concrete/gravel) have been left as off-road cycle routes across the heath; one can be seen in the foreground. Hampshire treasures lists a similar-sized barrow in the same area but I couldn't find it easily.

Setley Plain disc barrows
Date Added: 19th Sep 2010
Site Type: Round Barrow(s)
Country: England (Hampshire)
Visited: Yes on 1st Jan 2006

Setley Plain disc barrows submitted by JimChampion on 1st Jan 2006. View looking north of the lone disc barrow at grid ref SU298998 (diameter roughly 30 metres). The earthworks are noticeable on this open expanse of heathland, but not easy to photograph. Here the low winter sun casts shadows that make the ditch and outer bank visible, and also the mutilated central mound with its covering of burnt gorse bushes.
