Doubler Stones Allotment 04

Doubler Stones Allotment 04 submitted by bonirex on 19th Aug 2024. Images taken in the early evening sun on August 18th 2024. Having read the description from 2012 I wasn't expecting to see much but this panel was a very pleasant surprise. The stone has either been cleared of lichen at some point, or has lost it naturally, but there are three cups with rings clearly visible, one of which has a double ring and is unusually large - looks like it was cut deeply. At least another two cups are visible, as well as a clear groove at the bottom of the panel, surr...

Log Text: I’ve been meaning to come out here for a while and finally made it. Definitely worth the trip!

It’s a restored henge and circle but it’s well done. And the setting next to the gravel pit lake is very nice. Just try to ignore the landfill, and the roar of off-road vehicles on the other side of the lake.

The small carpark is a little tricky to find. Follow the signs for the household recycling and you’ll spot it. There is a sign “this way for the DQs” to get you onto the (muddy) footpath between the landfill and lake.

I had it to myself on this wet Sunday morning.

Log Text: Not easy to get to. We parked in a lay-by in Broad Town with a plan to visit the white horse and the castle. Public footpath off Chapel lane overgrown and impassible. Alternative route up Horn lane OK. Came back via the White Horse trail which has good views of the horse. Not well signed or defined in parts and is also partially overgrown with nettles and brambles. However that’s probably the best way in and out. Take a big stick.

Site itself is great. Atmospheric location with lovely views. No structures or stonework visible but you can imagine the (pre-chalk pits) layout pretty well. Worth the struggle!

No shade at the top (but trees below). Some steep banks and drops. Cows live here.
