The remains of a Roman castellum, settlement and cemetery were discovered on Reckberg hill in Neuss (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany). The castellum was part of the Lower Germanic Limes. Mehringer Steine 1 submitted by Martin_L on 5th Feb 2010. Site viewed from the East. Remains of a 7 (or 6) capstone megalithic tomb measuring appr. 14m x 3,5m originally with oval enclosure. The latter being completely destroyed except for one kerbstone remaining in the South-east. At least 3 capstones are robbed, another one is damaged by blasting attempts. The remaining capstones collapsed into the chamber. The chamber is partly embedded into the remains of the oval barrow. April 2009

It consists of several boulders stacked on top of each other. The site was dedicated as a memorial for Albert Leo Schlageter in 1934 and later in 1953 as a memorial for prisoner of war. The museum was opened in 1892 by Johann Carl Fuhlrott, who first described the bones of the Neanderthal. The museum was closed to the public in 2008 because the city of Wuppertal had not enough money to support the museum anymore. Since then, it has been speculated if it could be re-opened again someday. However, this option seems to get more unlikely with each year passed. Picture of the entrance ...

Log Text: I had visited the still opened museum when I was a child and a teenager. The presentation of the finds always seemed to be a bit old fashioned, but as an interested person, I visited it several times.

The site resembles a dolmen and is situated near Mussenbach creek, which was the old borderline between the villages Freckenhorst and Hoetmar.
