Excavations beneath the church lead to the discovery of several votive stones dedicated to the Gallo-Roman Matronae Aufaniae, which are Romanized versions of Gallo/Germanic mother deities. The remains of an ancient settlement were discovered on a modern construction site in Bochum (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) in October 2016. Several outlines of houses, post holes and pits were found.It us currently assumed that the setlement is 4000 years old and could represent one of the few known Bronze Age settlements in this area.
