Chimera

Chimera submitted by h_fenton on 1st Sep 2007. One of the largest flames of the Chimera at night (Olimpos/Olympos, Turkey). This particular flame is no more than a metre tall most flames are only a few inches.
In ancient times the flame are thought to have been larger. I was at the site for about twenty minutes and the flame sizes varied quite a lot during that period.

The 'Alexander Sarcophagus', it gets it name from a scene on it that depicts 'Alexander the Great' winning a victory over the Persians. The sarcophagus came from the 'Royal Necropolis of Sidon' in what is now Lebanon and was made in the last quarter of the 4thcenturyBC (325-300BC). there is some argument amongst scholars about who's sarcophagus it was but the traditional view is that it belonged to King Abdalonymos of Sidon.

the obelisk stands on some metal feet (looks like bronze) on top of this block of marble. in the right photo you can see where some of the hieroglyphics have been truncated when the lower part of the obelisk was removed.

Arsameia submitted by h_fenton on 16th Jan 2011. The largest Greek inscription in Anatolia, at Arsameia, the inscription covers the flat area of rock above the tunnel/shaft entrance.
The shaft/tunnel descends 158metres at an angle into the hillside.
