Farmcote gatepost submitted by h_fenton on 31st Aug 2008. An old stone gatepost(?- no hinges) at Farmcote in Gloucestershire (Cotswolds near Winchcombe). Most stone gateposts across the cotswolds are square in section c.40x40cm and stand upto 1.5metres high with a rounded top. This gatepost is unusual, in that it is a rough triangular shaped stone which has then been extensively carved and shaped on three sides, with recesses that suggest it had wooden posts tightly against it, plus some small rectangular sockets of unknown function. Log Text: Visited this site in the morning with strong low sunlight which was fantastic for showing up the cup and ring marks. I stayed for a while as the sun rose, highlighting further cup and ring marks. Unfenced out in the field a short distance to the west of the main group a few more ring marks were visible where the grass has worn away.
With the permission of the farmer, I flew my kite here to take some aerial photographs of the rock art. There were a couple of cows in the field but they were only mildly interested in what I was doing.
