St Ann's Well (Great Malvern)
Date Added: 23rd Aug 2017
Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: England (Herefordshire)
Visited: Would like to visit

St Ann's Well (Great Malvern) submitted by AJK on 3rd Sep 2006. St. Anne was well known in the Middle Ages as a patroness of wells & springs. Cottagers probably lived here as early as the 13th century, near the site of an even older monk's hermitage. The purity of the water attracted 18th century visitors and the pump room and baths were built between 1815-1819. By the 1850's, the heyday of Malvern's spa, this became the most popular of the hill-springs for the spa's visitors. During the summer months, a German band regularly played here.

The stone bears a Latin inscription from the Romano-British period; this inscription recalls HIC JACET ULCAGNIUS FILIUS SENOMACILI which is probably translated as 'Here lies Ulcagnus (Olcanus) son of Senomaglus' and is thought to date from between 500-510 AD.
The stone is in the vestry, easily accessible
