Moel-y-Gaer (Llangollen)

Moel-y-Gaer (Llangollen) submitted by Erin on 31st Jan 2011. Moel y Gaer hillfort, the hill between this summit and the large one in the middle distance (Moel Gamelin which is home to a burial mound). You can just make out the bank of the hillfort on the summit of Moel y Gaer, enclosing around 1 acre.

Log Text: Moel y Gaer hillfort on Llantysilio Mountains is currently a part of the Heritage Lottery Funded Heather and Hillforts Project in north east Wales. Part of this project is to conserve and manage the heritage of the hills but a major aspect is to deal with the problem of illegal off-roading which is currently damaging both the internationally rare heather moorland and the archaeology- a track running straight through the middle of the hillfort and also the nearby bronze Age burial mound of Moel Gamelin. Management projects to restore the damage and by working closely with the Police and the public with awareness raising of the problem to try to stop illegal off road use will hopefully protect the hillfort in the future. An excavation, through the Project and CADW, by Clwyd Powys Archaeological Trust, took place in 2010 and uncovered the remains of two roundhouses after geophysical survey in 2009 highlighted many possible features lying underneath the surface.
