Excavations in 1978 revealed that the Medieval wall of this outer gateway was constructed on top of a prehistoric rampart with external ditch and counterscarp bank.
Prehistoric artefacts including bronze axes and implements, clay moulds and crucibles for casting bronze and a large amount of prehistoric pottery have been on the site of this 4 hectare hillfort.

Barclodiad-y-Gawres (Anglesey) submitted by TimPrevett on 13th Apr 2004. A look at the dolmen, which is the top of the cruciform section, inside Barclodiad.
As with many dolmens, the capstone almost seems precariously placed.

Log Text: Enclosed encaged in a mock up like at Newgrange, which is very misleading.
It has guided tours inside at summer weekends you book online. I would rate the guide at 5/10.
The original tomb is quite small, has a similar sized cap on the main chamber as other local chambers. What makes Barclodiad different is its side chambers, and the decorated stones giving a distinct Irish style. No Bronze Age material was found so it seems to be not used later.
Oh, and the passage faces north. Haha.

Log Text: the 3.2m quartz outer is an imposing stone. lichen does not seem to grow on quartz, so it is bare rock. The landowner is very proud of it and said that in the full moonlight the stone gleams. it would have been a beacon from afar.

Log Text: i parked up the road in an empty farm yard. it's about a km walk from there, along an old track (don't block this). no gates. the site is more overgrown than old photos, but someone cuts the grass now and then. Take care as it is lumpy stones under the long grass. The stones seem to be local rock, as i saw several red granite, quartz and mica encrusted stones in the field walls and clearance dumps. quite an exotic feel.
the stones are verging on monumental. a red granite west and quartz east. the west flanker is quartz and the recumbent's top is a fat quartz vein. other stones are notable for their 'pointy' ness.
