The underlying helmet found within the grave is of a Coolus type. It would have been hammered into shape from a cast rough-out. The helmet rim is decorated with a hatched and punched frieze. A pair of connectors were riveted to either side for a leather chin strap to secure the helmet in place.
Openwork Crests.
These two openwork crests are unique. They were attached to the helmet by means of five mounts, creating a headdress unlike anything discovered previously. The crescent-sha...

Graylingwell Earthwork submitted by CoppellaiaMatta on 12th Feb 2025. New playing fields are being built in the park, they reach the edges of the iron age dyke but don't overrun it. I think it would be nice to have some information points to help people understand the landscape they are moving in, as part of the redevelopment.

There is a replica of the piraeus lion in historiska museet, stockholm, where the runes are coloured. after i saw that copy, of course i wanted to see the real statue. the runes are graffity from vikings who went to greece (actually, quite many went to greece, at least, that's what swedish rune stones tell us). on this site, a typical viking age serpent with a body of runes can be seen. on the other side, there are some straight lines of runes
