D1 Steenbergen submitted by Martin_L on 12th Jan 2012. Pole aerial view from the NW. Skeleton of a 12m by 3m-3,6m passage grave. Capstone C3 (counting from the West) is damaged and was fallen when Professor van Giffen examined the site in the 1920s, but later placed back. Otherwise chambers' megalithic structure was well preserved. The chamber is more than halfways embedded into a sand dune. Clear height reduced to less than 0,6m. Possibly there also are remains of the barrow. August 2011

Log Text: Very nice and long hiking trail with many different tumuli and reconstruction work. The information boards are something and have suffered a bit. Still one of the most beautiful archaeological hiking trails that can be found near Hamburg.

The barrow has been used by several generations, and was surrounded by 3 rings of stones. The capstone is not original. The original has been brought to the museum of Schloss Gottorf in Schleswig.

Log Text: The rune stones that stand in the wild around Haithabu are reconstructions. The originals are protected in the Viking Museum in Haithabu. Translated, the text of this one means: "King Sven placed this stone after (in memory of) Skarthe, his follower, who had gone west (England), but now fell near Haithabu."
