The Giant's Grave Mardon Down

The Giant's Grave Mardon Down submitted by AngieLake on 21st Nov 2008. Looking approx SE over the "amorphous much-spread mound" [Butler's quote] of the Giant's Grave on Mardon Down's highest point. (If ever a name failed to deliver.....!) The ridgeway track curves around it here, and if you wish to visit the 'Pillared Cairn' [our site page Mardon Down N] to the north, another footpath leads to it just to my left.

The Hurlers (C)

The Hurlers (C) submitted by Horatio on 24th Jun 2024. This stone I kept coming back to as a lovely lozenge shape and stood out amongst the more usual upright stones. Apart from its reduced size it wouldn't look amiss on West Kennet Avenue.

These two stones stand to the west of the Hurlers stone circles. The dung in the foreground is from the ponies that graze the moor.

Butterdon Hill with its two large cairns, where the row starts, is on the horizon. Butterdon Hill Barrow, where the row reaches the top of the ridge and changes direction can also just be made out, midway between the top of the longstone and the left hand cairn.
