Country: England (Staffordshire)
Visited: Yes on 1st Mar 2012. My rating: Condition -1 Ambience 3 Access 5

Cock Low (Leek) submitted by astronomer on 8th Mar 2015. Thanks to Leek historians, Margaret and Colin Bowyer, who kindly supplied an image of an 1838 map of Leek, it might be possible to shed some more light on Cock Low. The map clearly shows a prominent mound near what is now the playing fields at Spring Gardens. In her 1999 book, 'Leek's Forgotten Centuries', E.A Biddulph states that the burial mound, 18ft high and 120ft wide was on part of the property owned by a Mrs Watt, standing between Waterloo Rd, Messr's Broster's Mill and Spring Gardens. Elkstone Barrow 2
Date Added: 7th Sep 2014
Site Type: Round Barrow(s)
Country: England (Staffordshire)
Visited: Yes on 7th Sep 2014. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3 Access 4
Log Text: Visible as a low, spread mound a short distance to the South of Elkstone I. The surface is fairly rough, like much of the field. The field drops away to the South of the barrow. Can be seen from Breech Road for a clearer view in profile.
Elkstone III is to the South-West of this barrow - the long quarry trench running North-South along the field has truncated its Western quadrants.
Elkstone Barrow 1
Date Added: 7th Sep 2014
Site Type: Round Barrow(s)
Country: England (Staffordshire)
Visited: Yes on 7th Sep 2014. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 3 Access 4

Elkstone Barrow 1 submitted by twentytrees on 9th Sep 2006. 1.4m high, 24x19m wide. Excavation found many artefacts. Very high location, on the border between the Staffordshire morrlands and the White Peak. Views in all directions and, apparently, a great place for flying model aeroplanes. Scheduled monument 22416.

Log Text: The most visible of the three barrows in this field but also the most mutilated. The field is very rough pasture with lots of evidence of mining and quarrying. Reminded me a little of the field containing Grindon Moor Barrow. Fantastic panoramic views though. Elkstone II and III are to the South of this barrow so the mound to the West is not one of the scheduled barrows - it is shown on EH mapping as a disused limekiln. The Trig pillar on top of Merryton Low I can be seen on the horizon to the North-West.
Sandbach Crosses

Visited: Yes on 1st Jan 2012. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 5
Sandbach Crosses submitted by TimPrevett on 25th Mar 2005. The two huge crosses at Sandbach (pronounced sand-batch; most are probably familiar with the Sandbach Services on the M6) ; I've travelled many miles taking in other crosses en route, but these two are as near as on my doorstep, and I'd never visited! The astonishment I felt at their size was in proportion to said size.
I wasn't particularly happy with the photos I took on this visit, but having been once and being so close, I'll return, and also for a night shot when they are lit up, hopefull...

Date Added: 13th Aug 2014
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Staffordshire)
Visited: Yes on 2nd Jun 2013. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 2
Log Text: The road leading to the site is a private road. The main road running South from Loggerheads is very busy and nowhere to park. I would suggest parking in Loggerheads itself and walking to the site. There are paths leading nearly all the way around the fort. Ditches and banks visible in parts. Fairly heavily afforested.

Log Text: This is the barrow Elizabeth Biddulph calls Fawfieldhead Low in her book Leek's Forgotten Past. Very large, dwarfs the modern barn next to it. One of my favourite barrows in Staffordshire Moorlands.

Log Text: Descheduled. The earthwork mound reported by Bateman has gone. The natural rock outcrop shows little evidence of use for the funerary deposits recorded by Bateman and Carrington due to quarrying, the wall being built on top of it etc. Due to Bateman's vague description of location difficult to be sure this is the actual site he opened.
