Ipstones tympanum

Ipstones tympanum submitted by astronomer on 29th Dec 2009. The Ipstone tympanum contains several devices, the elaborate scroll-work and the knotted tails of the beasts that suggest a Saxon origin with Viking Northumbrian overtones. There is a similar, early Saxon, carving 25 miles away at Breedon on the Hill, Leicestershire. Both Ipstones and Breedon are within the political catchment of English Mercia, whose capital at Repton was contested by the Vikings.

Ilamptops Low submitted by TwentyTrees on 24th Jan 2008. Fine barrow surmounted by a tree on the ridge that separates the Manifold and Dove rivers. Highly prominent located on a local high point at 336m. Shown as both Ilam Tops and Ilamtops, but not IlamPtops, on OS map. Scheduled monument : "Limited antiquarian investigation at the centre of the mound located a rock cut grave containing a fill of stones amongst which were a child's skull and scattered bones of an adult. Hurst Low

Hurst Low submitted by twentytrees on 9th Sep 2006. Marked as Tumuli on the map but this may refer to nearby Grindon Moor barrow. There appears to be numerous mounds in a line (lined up on nearby Butterton church spire?) but they are in a much denunded state, so difficult to be sure. Not scheduled.

Log Text: Saw a huge misshapen mound in the field containing Hurst Low but that looked more like a spoil heap or something. Large agricultural building has been erected nearby in same field too. Whole area very messy with vehicles parked in the field and bits of rusty agricultural equipment lain about. Failed to I.D. the barrow.

Hoften's Cross

Hoften's Cross submitted by Astronomer on 18th Mar 2004. A 'rude' cross, possibly a re-used prehistoric, standing stone located near Caldon Low quarries at a crossroads called Hoften's Cross. There is a pub called the Cross (or something similar) over the road from this 2.5m standing stone, map ref SK072481 on the OS Explorer 259, Derby, Uttoxeter, Ashbourne & Cheadle map.

Log Text: Visible from the road and the car park of The Cross pub across the road. A footpath enters the field where Hoften's Cross is located. The close proximity of a stable made this not one of the more scenic spots. A shame that the pub sign has a crusader knight on it rather than this rude cross!

Grub Low

Grub Low submitted by astronomer on 1st Oct 2014. This tumulus was easily approached from Grindon via Oldsfield Farm and then across farmland bordered on its E side by a well defined but interrupted very ancient hollow-way descending to Back o' th' Brook in the hamlet of Waterfall. The tumulus , according to the farmer at Oldsfield, was excavated in the late 19thC (Bateman?). Present day examination showed a hollowed out centre in a modest tumulus with a later shallow quarry immediately to its west flank. Looking 120deg ESE is the hill wit...

Gawton's Well

Gawton's Well submitted by TimPrevett on 4th Nov 2008. Got around to visiting here yesterday, and it's brilliant. It's only 16 miles east for me, so returning won't be too much of an issue. Very atmospheric woodland and castle like folly neaby too. I wouldn't be surprised if therein lies a connection with the well. The spring lies within a large circular wall, in varying states of collapse, and within that is an elipse of yew trees - reminiscent of the ring of trees in "Nightmare Before Christmas". If this were Wales I'd start thinking this was th...
