St Ruffin's Well (Tamworth)

St Ruffin's Well (Tamworth) submitted by TimPrevett on 26th Sep 2007. If one looks at the map on Defra, the wall behind the raised beds, beneath the balcony, delineates the site and course of the well. Aside from the plaque, there is nothing obvious there to denote a holy well. The entry on Pastscape strongly suggests the holy well remains within the main fabric of the castle (grid ref SK20620392); however, the castle staff dug in a book, knowing nothing of the holy well when I enquired. The book shows a holy well on the lower terraces in what would have been...

Nun's Well (Cannock Wood)

Nun's Well (Cannock Wood) submitted by TimPrevett on 7th Sep 2008. The site of Nun's Well can be accessed by a permissive path from the north from the car park. It is now sealed off by an old gate, chicken wire, galvanised sheets and earth - right beneath an oak tree. If you look carefully to the north east of the trunk, there is a nook through which you can put your arm and camera, revealing a recessed well housing and the materials which now block it to the front.

Ipstones tympanum

Ipstones tympanum submitted by astronomer on 29th Dec 2009. The Ipstone tympanum contains several devices, the elaborate scroll-work and the knotted tails of the beasts that suggest a Saxon origin with Viking Northumbrian overtones. There is a similar, early Saxon, carving 25 miles away at Breedon on the Hill, Leicestershire. Both Ipstones and Breedon are within the political catchment of English Mercia, whose capital at Repton was contested by the Vikings.

Beechenhill Cairns submitted by TwentyTrees on 24th Jan 2008. Shown on the OS map as tumuli it contains three separate scheduled monuments, two of which are immediately adjacent. The first, scheduled monument 13536 is located on a local high pioint, highly visible from the road and about as upturned bowl shaped as it gets. The other two are further from the road and less easy to discern. Scheduled monuments 13537 and 13538 are located on a nearby hill some 50m to the west of the first. The roadside situation of St Helen's Well, just up the road from The Royal Oak, past the "Rushton" sign, immediately after the property named "Spring Bank" (bit of a giveaway!) on the right. Some steps lead down to a deep chamber, if not overgrown!
