Devil's Ring and Finger
Date Added: 26th Sep 2015
Site Type: Holed Stone
Country: England (Staffordshire)
Visited: Would like to visit

Devil's Ring and Finger submitted by Paul Morgan on 25th Jul 2001. This site is all that remains of a long cairn. The Devil's Ring is a perforated septal stone similar to the one at the Bridestones in Cheshire. The Finger was, perhaps, a portal stone. Neither are in their original position.
Located near Mucklestone, Staffordshire and marked on OS map 127.

Visited: Would like to visit

The Leper Well submitted by TimPrevett on 4th Aug 2007. The Leper Well sits on the south side of Whitehouse Lane between Codsall and Codsall Wood, behind a wooden fence which prohibits access. A visit out of season may tell more of the location, with less obfuscating foliage. Two hawthorns are on the SE side of the well.

The Giant's Well (Kinver)
Date Added: 26th Sep 2015
Site Type: Holy Well or Sacred Spring
Country: England (Staffordshire)
Visited: Would like to visit

The Giant's Well (Kinver) submitted by TimPrevett on 23rd Sep 2007. The pathetic remains of The Giant's Well on the corner of Heather Drive and Stone Lane resemble a rusted iron urinal and ruined barbeque surround. In 2000 there were moves to have it renovated, but the effort and expense (something like £50,000) were deemed too excessive. The Giant's Well links in with the folklore of the nearby Rock Shelters, Kinver Edge, and the long destroyed Boltstone, which was lobbed by an enraged giant who noticed another flirtatious giant had visited his wife during the...

There is not one stone in Bradley (pronounced Braid-lee), not two, but three! In the parish church of All Saints (which is on the highest part of the village, and is thought likely to be a Christianised pagan site), there is a local guidebook, "A Chronicle of Bradeley - The Story of an English Village 1000-2000AD" by William & Anne Wilkinson. Despite its subtitle, page 5 does have entries on its monuments prior to 1000AD.
These stones are in fact "glacial erratics...

Castle Ring (Staffordshire) submitted by TimPrevett on 5th Jan 2004. Castle Ring SK045128
Looking E / NE - despite Castle Ring being the highest part of Cannock Chase, the only part with a panoramic view, looks towards (Rugeley?) Power Station!
Castle Ring was actually recommended to me by a colleague at work who does not know of my stones / pre-history interest; she grew up in the Cannock area, and given we were making a trip to Stafford anyway, I'd heard that Cannock Chase was supposed to quite nice. Knowing that she grew up there, I
asked her if Cannock...

Date Added: 26th Sep 2015
Site Type: Cave or Rock Shelter
Country: England (Staffordshire)

Saint Bertram's Cave submitted by TimPrevett on 8th Aug 2006. A view of the cave opening, with hole to wider fissure beyond. Speaking with a Brummie chap who's been coming to the area for some time, and my having left the area, his description of the cave I found didn't match. However, even the Trent & Peak Archaeological Trust couldn't agree on which cave here was the lynx cave in notes on the NMR - so it appears uncertainty is the name of the game.
