Bishop's Wood
Date Added: 13th Aug 2014
Site Type: Hillfort
Country: England (Staffordshire)
Visited: Yes on 2nd Jun 2013. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 2
Log Text: The road leading to the site is a private road. The main road running South from Loggerheads is very busy and nowhere to park. I would suggest parking in Loggerheads itself and walking to the site. There are paths leading nearly all the way around the fort. Ditches and banks visible in parts. Fairly heavily afforested.

Elkstone Barrow 1 submitted by twentytrees on 9th Sep 2006. 1.4m high, 24x19m wide. Excavation found many artefacts. Very high location, on the border between the Staffordshire morrlands and the White Peak. Views in all directions and, apparently, a great place for flying model aeroplanes. Scheduled monument 22416.

Log Text: The most visible of the three barrows in this field but also the most mutilated. The field is very rough pasture with lots of evidence of mining and quarrying. Reminded me a little of the field containing Grindon Moor Barrow. Fantastic panoramic views though. Elkstone II and III are to the South of this barrow so the mound to the West is not one of the scheduled barrows - it is shown on EH mapping as a disused limekiln. The Trig pillar on top of Merryton Low I can be seen on the horizon to the North-West.
Elkstone Barrow 2
Date Added: 7th Sep 2014
Site Type: Round Barrow(s)
Country: England (Staffordshire)
Visited: Yes on 7th Sep 2014. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3 Access 4
Log Text: Visible as a low, spread mound a short distance to the South of Elkstone I. The surface is fairly rough, like much of the field. The field drops away to the South of the barrow. Can be seen from Breech Road for a clearer view in profile.
Elkstone III is to the South-West of this barrow - the long quarry trench running North-South along the field has truncated its Western quadrants.

Long Low

Site Type: Long Barrow
Country: England (Staffordshire)

Long Low submitted by TimPrevett on 30th Jul 2006. Looking along Long Low to the SSW. Two interesting things about Long Low: 1) It is the only long barrow in Staffordshire, and 2) It has rounded ends, which are either described as two round barrows, or as rounded terminals. This is very reminiscent of the Broadmayne Bank Barrow in Dorset. Drystone walling intersects it in several places, and I styal is incorporated into one of the western side walls.

The Battle Stone (Ilam)
Date Added: 26th Sep 2015
Site Type: Ancient Cross
Country: England (Staffordshire)
Visited: Would like to visit

The Battle Stone (Ilam) submitted by TimPrevett on 30th Jul 2006. The Battle Stone - remains of an 11th Century Cross in the grounds of Ilam Hall. For most straightforward access, leave the church with the two Saxon Crosses, left to the river, then before the river turn right for a pleasant walk along its side. The cross is on the right hand side after about 10 minutes walking, as a wide meadow arcs to the left. The cross was not discovered until 1840, and the name, one must suppose, is down to the imagination of those who discovered it.
