Elder Bush Cave
Date Added: 26th Sep 2015
Site Type: Cave or Rock Shelter
Country: England (Staffordshire)
Visited: Would like to visit

Elder Bush Cave submitted by stu on 23rd Sep 2004. SK0978 5488.
Access to the cave is relatively straightforward. Follow the path from Thor's Cave round to the back of the hill. The cave is quite high on the crags. Look for a lone Elder bush, the cave entrance is below and a little to the side of the bush.

Site Type: Round Barrow(s)
Country: England (Staffordshire)
Visited: Yes on 7th Sep 2014. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 3 Access 4

Elkstone Barrow 1 submitted by twentytrees on 9th Sep 2006. 1.4m high, 24x19m wide. Excavation found many artefacts. Very high location, on the border between the Staffordshire morrlands and the White Peak. Views in all directions and, apparently, a great place for flying model aeroplanes. Scheduled monument 22416.

Log Text: The most visible of the three barrows in this field but also the most mutilated. The field is very rough pasture with lots of evidence of mining and quarrying. Reminded me a little of the field containing Grindon Moor Barrow. Fantastic panoramic views though. Elkstone II and III are to the South of this barrow so the mound to the West is not one of the scheduled barrows - it is shown on EH mapping as a disused limekiln. The Trig pillar on top of Merryton Low I can be seen on the horizon to the North-West.
Elkstone Barrow 2
Date Added: 7th Sep 2014
Site Type: Round Barrow(s)
Country: England (Staffordshire)
Visited: Yes on 7th Sep 2014. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3 Access 4
Log Text: Visible as a low, spread mound a short distance to the South of Elkstone I. The surface is fairly rough, like much of the field. The field drops away to the South of the barrow. Can be seen from Breech Road for a clearer view in profile.
Elkstone III is to the South-West of this barrow - the long quarry trench running North-South along the field has truncated its Western quadrants.

Further Harrop submitted by Vicky on 20th Sep 2001. Further Harrop barrow
Within the Peak District National Park (but still in Cheshire) this well preserved Bronze Age barrow (-SJ97157907 Landranger 118/Explorer 268/White Peak Outdoor Leisure Map) is found 4km NE of Bollington. Barnatt calls it a bowl shaped round barrow in his 1996 ‘Barrows in the Peak District’.

Gawton's Well submitted by TimPrevett on 4th Nov 2008. Got around to visiting here yesterday, and it's brilliant. It's only 16 miles east for me, so returning won't be too much of an issue. Very atmospheric woodland and castle like folly neaby too. I wouldn't be surprised if therein lies a connection with the well.
The spring lies within a large circular wall, in varying states of collapse, and within that is an elipse of yew trees - reminiscent of the ring of trees in "Nightmare Before Christmas". If this were Wales I'd start thinking this was th...

The tree is rooted in the barrow.

Grub Low submitted by astronomer on 1st Oct 2014. This tumulus was easily approached from Grindon via Oldsfield Farm and then across farmland bordered on its E side by a well defined but interrupted very ancient hollow-way descending to Back o' th' Brook in the hamlet of Waterfall.
The tumulus , according to the farmer at Oldsfield, was excavated in the late 19thC (Bateman?). Present day examination showed a hollowed out centre in a modest tumulus with a later shallow quarry immediately to its west flank.
Looking 120deg ESE is the hill wit...

Hoften's Cross
Date Added: 12th Aug 2014
Site Type: Early Christian Sculptured Stone
Country: England (Staffordshire)
Visited: Yes on 1st Jun 2013. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 3 Access 5

Hoften's Cross submitted by Astronomer on 18th Mar 2004. A 'rude' cross, possibly a re-used prehistoric, standing stone located near Caldon Low quarries at a crossroads called Hoften's Cross. There is a pub called the Cross (or something similar) over the road from this 2.5m standing stone, map ref SK072481 on the OS Explorer 259, Derby, Uttoxeter, Ashbourne & Cheadle map.

Log Text: Visible from the road and the car park of The Cross pub across the road. A footpath enters the field where Hoften's Cross is located. The close proximity of a stable made this not one of the more scenic spots. A shame that the pub sign has a crusader knight on it rather than this rude cross!

Holy Trinity Church, Eccleshall submitted by TimPrevett on 12th Sep 2005. The right hand (eastern) cross fragment in the choir vestry. Please note, the light conditions were dire, and so I have edited the photo to bring out as much detail as possible. A wheelie bin used as a tripod for this one. See main entry for detailed write up.

Site Type: Round Barrow(s)
Country: England (Staffordshire)
Visited: Couldn't find on 7th Apr 2013

Hurst Low submitted by twentytrees on 9th Sep 2006. Marked as Tumuli on the map but this may refer to nearby Grindon Moor barrow. There appears to be numerous mounds in a line (lined up on nearby Butterton church spire?) but they are in a much denunded state, so difficult to be sure. Not scheduled.

Log Text: Saw a huge misshapen mound in the field containing Hurst Low but that looked more like a spoil heap or something. Large agricultural building has been erected nearby in same field too. Whole area very messy with vehicles parked in the field and bits of rusty agricultural equipment lain about. Failed to I.D. the barrow.
