The roadside situation of St Helen's Well, just up the road from The Royal Oak, past the "Rushton" sign, immediately after the property named "Spring Bank" (bit of a giveaway!) on the right. Some steps lead down to a deep chamber, if not overgrown!

St Mary and All Saints (Checkley) submitted by TimPrevett on 8th May 2007. The three 9th Century Anglo-Scandinavian cross shafts in Checkley Churchyard. One would be fine! A superb group, each around 5 feet tall. The church and churchyard are fascinating. If not open a key is available very nearby - mail me for details. An unusual Saxon font is at the rear of the church, as well as a good guidebook for £2 as of 08/05/07. St Ruffin's Well (Tamworth) submitted by TimPrevett on 26th Sep 2007. If one looks at the map on Defra, the wall behind the raised beds, beneath the balcony, delineates the site and course of the well. Aside from the plaque, there is nothing obvious there to denote a holy well.
The entry on Pastscape strongly suggests the holy well remains within the main fabric of the castle (grid ref SK20620392); however, the castle staff dug in a book, knowing nothing of the holy well when I enquired. The book shows a holy well on the lower terraces in what would have been...

Log Text: Descheduled. The earthwork mound reported by Bateman has gone. The natural rock outcrop shows little evidence of use for the funerary deposits recorded by Bateman and Carrington due to quarrying, the wall being built on top of it etc. Due to Bateman's vague description of location difficult to be sure this is the actual site he opened.

The Battle Stone (Ilam) submitted by TimPrevett on 30th Jul 2006. The Battle Stone - remains of an 11th Century Cross in the grounds of Ilam Hall. For most straightforward access, leave the church with the two Saxon Crosses, left to the river, then before the river turn right for a pleasant walk along its side. The cross is on the right hand side after about 10 minutes walking, as a wide meadow arcs to the left. The cross was not discovered until 1840, and the name, one must suppose, is down to the imagination of those who discovered it.
