Date Added: 16th Jul 2013
Site Type: Modern Stone Circle etc

Visited: Yes on 16th Jul 2013. My rating: Condition 5 Ambience 4 Access 5

Maryhill Stonehenge war memorial submitted by stonetramp on 16th Oct 2007. Built by Sam Hill as a tribute to the soldiers of Klickitat County who lost their lives, Maryhill's Stonehenge is the first monument in our nation to honor the dead of World War I. The structure is a full-scale replica of England's famous neolithic Stonehenge. A Quaker pacifist, Hill was mistakenly informed that the original Stonehenge had been used as a sacrificial site, and thus constructed the replica to remind us that ''humanity is still being sacrificed to the god of war.'' The location now...

Log Text: Not an anthropology museum per se, and fairly pricey if your only interest are the galleries on the first people who lived in this region between the last Ice Age and European-contact. However, if you were flying into Indianapolis to visit the area, the collection would be a good introduction prior to visiting sites like Angel Mounds, Mounds State Park and particularly, other smaller locations without on site information.
Other galleries are more spectacular, including the collection of early marine life forms preserved in the extensive limestone deposits of Indiana.

Log Text: A huge, sprawling site that gives you more and more if you spend some time at both the museum and walking the huge expanse. I've visited many times starting in the mid 1990's. The earthen mounds are so large and so many in number that it's easy to become overwhelmed and a bit numb ("... oh, there's another mound ...")
Walking around the site and climbing to the top of the largest earthwork in the US, Monk's Mound, gives you an idea of the size of the site. This is a truncated pyramid with several terraces. The footprint is larger than that of the stone pyramids of Giza.
Portland Art Museum

Portland Art Museum submitted by bat400 on 4th Feb 2017. An Anthropomorphic Figure carved from basalt. Columbia River Valley. Pre-European Contact period.
The figure is over four and a half feet tall. From the catalog: "Considering its massive size and the exaggerated genitalia touching the ground, it probably served as a public monument to commemorate an individual either real or mythical, as a symbol of fertility, strength, and renewal."

Pella (Greece) submitted by davidmorgan on 3rd Dec 2006. Not a lot to see here, the mosaics in the museum are good (if they're not on tour).

Log Text: The main fully excavated and stabilized portions of the city are substantial, but one could wander over all the open areas and sporadic marked tombs outside the city for days. The site of the palace lies uphill from the new museum, and is not open to the public.
The new museum (opened in 2009) is amazing, with very good signage in Greek and English.
Tomb of Philip II
Date Added: 5th Jul 2017
Site Type: Chambered Cairn
Country: Greece (Northern Greece)
Visited: Yes on 7th May 2017. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 5 Access 5
Log Text: The Great Mound was apparently an overgrown but noted site into modern times when excavated formally in the 1970's. Now the multiple tombs and graves are displayed in this museum setting, with the beautiful finds along side the tombs. The lighting is very dim at first and especially when they first open each day, the site is very crowded, but in 2017, the site appears to be open into the early evening and the crowds die down by mid afternoon.

Log Text: Maps still show the major buildings, tombs, and sanctuaries, but almost all of the ancient city of Aigai is currently closed to visitors. However, you can still hike up to see the fenced off (but visible) theater from the big parking lot on the east side of the modern village of Vergina. From here you have a great view to the north over what was the agora, a portion of the city's eastern wall, and the cemetery complexes.
To the east you can see the modern village of Palatitsia ("palace,") where the 16th century church of St. Demetrius can be seen with ancient column drums making up part of the walls. http://www.panoramio.com/photo/23715229

Country: Greece (Central Greece)
Visited: Yes on 12th May 2017. My rating: Condition 5 Ambience 5 Access 5
Thebes Museum submitted by AlexHunger on 23rd Aug 2006. The Museum in Thebes looked like a mediaval tower built from antique blocks and is recommended by the Michelin Guide for Greece. It is however still being renovated at this time.
Thebes is the legendary city of Cadmus and Oedipus, though only few antique monuments can be found.

Log Text: The only part of the ancient city one can easily visit today is the Hellenistic theater. There are apparently the foundations of a villa near the theater, but the site itself seems to be grown over. The city site itself is visible as a tree and brush covered high ground, but that portion is not accessible.
Outside the city one can visit the "School of Aristotle" and several tombs.
