Country: Peru

Log Text: The civic center associated with the famous "Lord of Sipan" tomb finds. Visible are the large adobe pyramids, and a burial platform. The tombs found in the burial platform remain open and contain simple reproductions of the tomb finds as well as signage describing the tombs.
The pyramids themselves are dramatically eroded, but careful examination shows the adobe brick structure. A nearby museum describes the Moche culture and multiple noble burials, but the finds from the tomb of the "Lord of Sipan" himself are in the museum of the Royal Tombs innearby Lambayeque City. Please visit here as well you show your support of the local village and the vendors who work near the museum.

Log Text: Not an anthropology museum per se, and fairly pricey if your only interest are the galleries on the first people who lived in this region between the last Ice Age and European-contact. However, if you were flying into Indianapolis to visit the area, the collection would be a good introduction prior to visiting sites like Angel Mounds, Mounds State Park and particularly, other smaller locations without on site information.
Other galleries are more spectacular, including the collection of early marine life forms preserved in the extensive limestone deposits of Indiana.

Log Text: On a whim, we turned off the highway when we saw a sign, and then we kept following signs until we arrived. An interesting combination of the tomb and the wind turbines beyond it, I was impressed by the local sense of ownership. In addition to access and a place to park there was a low table for picnics complete with a flower arrangement.
Lake Koshkonong Mounds
Date Added: 28th Apr 2017
Site Type: Artificial Mound
Country: United States (Great Lakes Midwest)
Visited: Yes on 31st Mar 2013

Lake Koshkonong Mounds submitted by bat400 on 31st Mar 2013. One of the larger remaining mounds in this group, shaped like a turtle. However, this is just about impossible to tell from a photo, both because there is no way to see the overall shape from ground level, and because these mounds are not kept carefully trimmer of high vegetation or outlines with contrasting ground cover.

Lake Okeechobee submitted by bat400 on 2nd Oct 2008. Lake Okeechobee. Taken from the eastern shore of the lake, north of Belle Glade. Heavy rains from the 2008 Hurricane season have increased the water levels slightly, but drought conditions still are reducing the lake depth in some areas. As you can see, Okeechobee is too wide to see the opposite shore.

Log Text: Our guide told us that although salt had been collected hear long before the Spanish conquest, the number and extent of the salt pans seen today are a modern feature. Even in his own lifetime the area of the "works" were dramatically smaller. Having said that, the methodology appears to not have changed for many hundreds of years.
