Log Text: The site is generally covered in unmowed grasses which makes for some small difficulty walking with uneven ground and loose stones underfoot. There is a very obvious oval on high ground (the acropolis?) with a wall, much broken, on it southern border. At the north border, you overlook the valley where the famous battle against the Persians took place At this northern point someone has set a modern column and a small metal shrine (which is empty).
The much better defined wall of larger, more intact stoves, on a NW - SE line, south of the oval described above. It crosses the main road east of the modern town, and is marked there with the typical "Archaeological Site" brown and yellow sign. This wall is very large and shows several towers in the fortification. I'm uncertain if this separate wall dates from the 5th Century BC, or is a later addition, perhaps when Phillip of Macedon is credited with refounding the previously destroyed city.

Tomb of Philip II

Date Added: 5th Jul 2017
Site Type: Chambered Cairn Country: Greece (Northern Greece)
Visited: Yes on 7th May 2017. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 5 Access 5

Log Text: The Great Mound was apparently an overgrown but noted site into modern times when excavated formally in the 1970's. Now the multiple tombs and graves are displayed in this museum setting, with the beautiful finds along side the tombs. The lighting is very dim at first and especially when they first open each day, the site is very crowded, but in 2017, the site appears to be open into the early evening and the crowds die down by mid afternoon.

Tholos of Clytaemnestra

Tholos of Clytaemnestra submitted by AlexHunger on 27th Aug 2006. fanciful name for a Tholos built about 1220 BCE, well before the Trojan war. This Tholos was found in the early 19th Century and robbed by a Turkish official before Greek independence. At the time the perfectly corbelled roof was damaged, but this has been repaired in 1951 with the original blocks . The Dromos is 37 Meters long and 6 Meters wide while the tomb has a diameter of 13.5 Meters and an original height of 13 meters.

Log Text: The only part of the ancient city one can easily visit today is the Hellenistic theater. There are apparently the foundations of a villa near the theater, but the site itself seems to be grown over. The city site itself is visible as a tree and brush covered high ground, but that portion is not accessible.
Outside the city one can visit the "School of Aristotle" and several tombs.

Thebes Museum

Thebes Museum submitted by AlexHunger on 23rd Aug 2006. The Museum in Thebes looked like a mediaval tower built from antique blocks and is recommended by the Michelin Guide for Greece. It is however still being renovated at this time. Thebes is the legendary city of Cadmus and Oedipus, though only few antique monuments can be found.

Pella (Greece) submitted by davidmorgan on 3rd Dec 2006. Not a lot to see here, the mosaics in the museum are good (if they're not on tour).

Log Text: The main fully excavated and stabilized portions of the city are substantial, but one could wander over all the open areas and sporadic marked tombs outside the city for days. The site of the palace lies uphill from the new museum, and is not open to the public.
The new museum (opened in 2009) is amazing, with very good signage in Greek and English.
