Spinsters' Rock

Spinsters' Rock submitted by AngieLake on 23rd Oct 2007. When a friend and I visited on 8th October we spent most of the afternoon here, and to begin with it was very sunny. I liked the way the underside of the capstone is lit up here. Two things NOT to do: Don't picnic, and don't feed this pony - he may bite! (see site page for more).

St Cleer's Well

St Cleer's Well submitted by AngieLake on 20th Oct 2004. This is a close-up of the monk-like figure in the niche on the front wall of the well-house. I couldn't help noticing the phallic shape of the granite point on the roof, though maybe it was just the angle! Perhaps a relic of more Pagan times.

St Cuby's Well (Duloe) submitted by AngieLake on 1st Oct 2008. Another view of the old font that once held the waters of St. Cuby's Well. "The stone bowl from the well originally had dolphins carved round the top but they were damaged when the bowl was stolen. On the sides are a snake facing a gryffin, which are not Christian images." (Quote from leaflet in St. Cuby's church.)

St Dennis Hill Fort

St Dennis Hill Fort submitted by AngieLake on 19th Jul 2005. The interior of St Dennis Dinas, or Dynas, meaning Hill fort. Today it is the churchyard of St Dennis church. Here the path leads off to a break in the west side of the rugged wall where two old well-worn steps lead into the area. Craig Weatherall, in his book Cornovia, tells us that the line of the inner bank of the fort, which may have been stone-built, is followed by the current churchyard wall. It was the most atmospheric churchyard I'd ever had the pleasure to visit, and was enhanced by...

St Eval Church Stones

St Eval Church Stones submitted by AngieLake on 18th Jul 2005. Another stone in the perimeter wall at St Eval in Cornwall. This one is approximately south of the south main door of the church. There are no less than six Green Men bosses on the ceiling inside the church. It is very atmospheric inside: you can't help but remember those brave young men who fought for our country in WW2.

St John's Well (Morwenstow)

St John's Well (Morwenstow) submitted by AngieLake on 11th Oct 2004. Lovely situation, tucked away in a leafy dell, on the edge of an orchard. Access signposted from lane. Just across the lane from the 'gated' end of the churchyard path at Morwenstow - famous poet-priest, Hawker's - church. (A level path runs through the churchyard, just above the entrance gate to the drive of the Vicarage. There is a plan of the area opposite the main gateway to the church, near the tearooms and carpark.) Approach down overgrown steps fringed by fronds of ferns. Door of ...

St John's Well (Tavistock)

St John's Well (Tavistock) submitted by AngieLake on 31st Dec 2004. St John's Well at Tavistock (SX478739) is tucked into the hill in a public park area on the east bank of the River Tavy. A footpath runs parallel to the river bank on this side of the river, and a fairly slippery (it had been raining) flagstone path leads off at right-angles across the grass towards the little granite-arched well, and its capstone with 'St John's Well' carved on it.On the opposite side of the river, some walls still stand, bordering the footpath, which are from the ruins of t...

St Lythans

St Lythans submitted by AngieLake on 19th Jul 2008. The 'St Lythans Guardian'. I first noticed the amazing (and quite spooky) human likeness of this stone in 2002, and it seems even more striking now, on a 2nd visit. [The hole is the mouth, and two depressions where eyes would be. The rest of the 'body' is about right for size ratio. Was this intended, I wonder?]

St Michael's Mount crosses submitted by AngieLake on 31st Dec 2009. One of the most noticeable crosses on the edge of the cliff below the castle. In 'Ancient Sites in Penwith' by Cheryl Straffon, in the section for 'Crosses', 'St Michael's Mount', she writes: "... an ancient magnificent 6ft shafted and decorated cross (5144 2981) on the SW side poised precariously above the sea."

This is what the church guide book has to say: "The Holy Well The holy well is some three hundred yards from the church.
