Mattocks Down Stone
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 1st Sep 2008

Mattocks Down Stone submitted by AngieLake on 1st Sep 2008. Mattocks Down standing stone, as photographed by the late James Ravilious, a famous rural archivist in North Devon.
(Taken from 'Treasures of Ancient Devon', Devon Books, 1996 edition.)
This photo was taken "after the stone received a direct lightning strike on 25/26 October 1996. Shattered fragments of the massive stone were thrown as far as 20 metres away from the surviving fragment, which still stands some 2 metres high."

Mardon Down N
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Circle
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 21st Nov 2008

Mardon Down N submitted by AngieLake on 21st Nov 2008. Mardon Down Cairn Circle (N) on the lower northern slopes of the ridge, overlooking the rest of Devon. As a guide, Cheriton Bishop, on the A30, would be in the distance here.
To access this site, keep going north on a narrower track when by Giant's Grave, instead of following the main ridgeway path. As seen here, the track then heads away diagonally to the right, and rejoins the main ridgeway track, going downhill towards the menhir 'Headless Cross'.

The Giant's Grave Mardon Down
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Cairn
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 21st Nov 2008

The Giant's Grave Mardon Down submitted by AngieLake on 21st Nov 2008. Believe it or not, this bumpy mass of vegetation, left, is the Giant's Grave. You can see how the [rather wet!] ridgeway track skirts around it on the highest part of Mardon Down.
Looking approx south here, with the other smaller cairn just behind it to the south.

Mardon Down Cairn 3
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Cairn
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 21st Nov 2008

Mardon Down Cairn 3 submitted by AngieLake on 21st Nov 2008. Flat topped Cairn 3 on Mardon Down, with a small stone still present in its outer ring, helping to maintain the shape. The "shallow trench into the centre" runs diagonally here from the right of the stone, into the centre.
My friend [top left] is standing further north by the ridgeway track, and to her right is the disappointing Giant's Grave.

Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Barrow Cemetery
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 6th May 2009

Corndon Down Cairns submitted by AngieLake on 6th May 2009. View north to Cairn A from the rocky outcrop at the highest point of Corndon Down, which Butler calls "a miniature tor". This mini-tor itself was once a cairn.
Further to the north, on a lower summit of Corndon Down, are two more cairns.
(An interpretation plan is included on the site page.)

Yar Tor Prehistoric Homestead
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Ancient Village or Settlement
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 6th May 2009

Yar Tor Prehistoric Homestead submitted by AngieLake on 6th May 2009. The most prominent stones of the site, at the higher end of the area. Butler says: "A large hut (9.5 m) with some massive stones in its wall ...", so I imagine this is what he was referring to.

Site Type: Henge
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 10th Aug 2009

Bow Henge submitted by AngieLake on 10th Aug 2009. Bow Henge viewed from the air during the drought of 1984. [Excuse quality, but this is an old photocopy from 'Devon's Past - an Aerial View' by Frances Griffith*, which has been tucked away in a file for ages, hence the crease.]
*In 2005 she was Devon County Archaeologist.
Her description:
"The cropmarks here represent the remains of quite a large prehistoric ceremonial structure - some 60m by 70m overall - which would previously have been a prominent feature of the landscape. The cropm...

Bampfylde Hill Barrows submitted by AngieLake on 28th Sep 2009. Apologies for the quality of this photo, but it was snapped on my digi camera from a laminated file in South Molton museum, mostly as an aide memoire, thinking I'd find something online..
This wasn't to be!

Shovel Down
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Multiple Stone Rows / Avenue
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 13th Nov 2009

Shovel Down submitted by AngieLake on 13th Nov 2009. Looking south from inside the grounds of Batworthy House [lucky friend lives there!] at the meeting of the double stone rows on Shovel Down. The smaller one just left of centre is the double row that ends in the small concentric circles of the cairn, with its large fallen portal stones. The Longstone would be over the rise to the top left.

Bellever Tor 2
Date Added: 26th Sep 2010
Site Type: Cairn
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 25th Nov 2009

Bellever Tor 2 submitted by AngieLake on 25th Nov 2009. This is a possible candidate for the 'circle' at SW of Bellever Tor. It's hard to tell, but this looked as if it was placed upright deliberately, and probably part of a cairn circle or hut circle.
10 Sept 09.
