Site Type: Stone Fort or Dun
Country: Scotland (Isle of Skye)
Visited: Yes on 13th Apr 2010

Dun Taimh submitted by Andy B on 13th Apr 2010. Dun Taimh occupies a prominent position at the western end of a steep sided narrow ridge. It is defended by a curved wall built across the ridge and along the southern edge, which although precipitous is not quite inaccessible. There is no wall on the north side, where the cliff rises vertically. There are two separate walls across the entrance. The inner wall shows small portions of both faces in position. The inner wall is still about 3m wide and 2m tall. The outer wall is reduced to the found...

Dun Maraig
Date Added: 17th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Fort or Dun
Country: Scotland (Isle of Skye)
Visited: Yes on 13th Apr 2010

Dun Maraig submitted by Creative Commons on 13th Apr 2010. The tidal island of Dun Maraig in Poll na h-Ealaidh has the vague remains of a fort on it. Once it was connected to the shore by a causeway, and it is still possible to walk across to it at very low tide.
Perhaps more interestingly, the small island was won as the star prize in a 1994 German TV game show by a Stefan Schluznus of Bremen. A pretty useless, but fun, sort of prize.

Cut Hill Stone Row
Date Added: 17th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Row / Alignment
Country: England (Devon)
Visited: Yes on 10th Apr 2010

Cut Hill Stone Row submitted by Andy B on 10th Apr 2010. Cut Hill is in North Dartmoor. It is one of the most isolated places of Dartmoor. The panoramic views from the summit are among the best that Dartmoor offers. Cut Hill is largely surrounded by wet and tussocky ground. The high fen is not far away. The word Cut derives from an old drovers' track - Cut Lane - which cuts through the fen that separates the Dart and Tavy valleys and thus allowed the more easy passage of livestock across the moor.

Anwick Drake Stones submitted by Andy B on 2nd Apr 2010. The Drake Stones
Two lumps of Spilsby sandstone by the gate to St.Edith’s church known as “The Drake Stones” … actually a glacial erratic, but with a considerably more interesting Lincolnshire folk tale explanation.
Long ago, a man ploughing a field north of the church saw his horses and plough mysteriously disappear into the ground and a dragon (drake) flew out. Next day when the villagers returned to the spot they found a stone shaped like a drakes head and thought there must be...
