Doon Castle (Broch)

Doon Castle (Broch) submitted by Andy B on 18th Apr 2010. This pile of stones is all that remains of Doon Castle Broch. Dating from approx 100BC it would have presented a spectacular sight when first built. The remains of a doorway and some lower walls can still be seen, but the remainder has collapsed. This castle occupied a prominent position at High Ardwell point and great views to the south towards the Mull of Galloway (as per photo) and west towards Northern Ireland can be had. Dun Boreraig Stone

Dun Boreraig Stone submitted by Andy B on 17th Apr 2010. The stone is about 4' high, 2' across and 6" thick. It faces south towards the sea at Loch Eishort and sits on a small mound of boulders placed around its base. Tradition suggests that the stone marks the burial site of a body or bodies washed ashore, a custom common on Skye. Copyright John Allan and licensed for reuse under the Creative Commons Licence.

Dun Skudiburgh

Dun Skudiburgh submitted by Andy B on 14th Apr 2010. Dun is the Gaelic for fort, which was built on a suitable crag or look out. This photo shows what a fantastis spot this was to see any invader coming in from the sea. The dun seemed to have arrived with the Brthonic Celts in about the 7th century BC. They are associated with the Iron Age culture of warrior tribes and petty chieftains. The duns were often smaller than brochs and were not capable of supporting large, tall structures. When does a dun become a broch? Copyright John Allan and lic...
