Dun Boreraig Stone
Date Added: 17th Sep 2010
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir)
Country: Scotland (Isle of Skye)
Visited: Yes on 17th Apr 2010

Dun Boreraig Stone submitted by Andy B on 17th Apr 2010. The stone is about 4' high, 2' across and 6" thick. It faces south towards the sea at Loch Eishort and sits on a small mound of boulders placed around its base. Tradition suggests that the stone marks the burial site of a body or bodies washed ashore, a custom common on Skye.

Site Type: Stone Fort or Dun
Country: Scotland (Isle of Skye)
Visited: Yes on 14th Apr 2010

Dun Cnoc a'Sga submitted by Andy B on 14th Apr 2010. Cnoc a'Sga is a flat topped hill rising to a height of 80m. At the south western end of the summit plateau are the scanty remains of a dun, largely grassed over. A few of the outer foundation stones remain in position and the outline of the fort is marked only by an irregular ring of dislodged blocks. At the left end in this picture can be seen a circular cairn about 7m in diameter and 1m high surmounted by a smaller modern cairn.

Dun Eyre submitted by Creative Commons on 14th Apr 2010. There is not a lot of the structure of the dun left to be seen, though there is no doubting the remains. It sat on top of this eminence, about 150m above Loch Eyre. The eminence itself is about 5m above the surrounding land. This view is looking up to the site with a double row of boulders marking the approach to the fort.

Dun Maraig
Date Added: 17th Sep 2010
Site Type: Stone Fort or Dun
Country: Scotland (Isle of Skye)
Visited: Yes on 13th Apr 2010

Dun Maraig submitted by Creative Commons on 13th Apr 2010. The tidal island of Dun Maraig in Poll na h-Ealaidh has the vague remains of a fort on it. Once it was connected to the shore by a causeway, and it is still possible to walk across to it at very low tide.
Perhaps more interestingly, the small island was won as the star prize in a 1994 German TV game show by a Stefan Schluznus of Bremen. A pretty useless, but fun, sort of prize.
