Castell Goetre submitted by Andy B on 12th Oct 2010. Castell Goetre (Possibly from Goed-Tref or 'settlement in the wood') is an Iron Age hill fort on the ridgeway between the Teifi and Dulas valleys. It is located in the northwest of this square and extends into SN6051 to the north.
The fort, now populated by sheep and home to a small reservoir, consists of an oval banked and ditched enclosure with a cross-bank through the centre, possibly part of an earlier phase. From ground level it appears much eroded but in places is still well defined, as ...

The outer bank of Casterley Camp is approximately one metre high around most of the perimeter of the hill fort. The foreground of this image shows part of the north westerly section of the ditch and bank. The southern and southeasterly sections of the bank can be seen at the far edge of the field that is now contained within the fort.

Looking East to Chanctonbury Ring, shows the most prominent Tumulus and to the right, the South Downs Way.
The 'Whaleback' nature of the ridge is clearly shown.
The trees of the ring were planted in the 'ring' of the hill fort by Charles Goring in the C18; devastated in the storm of 1987 they are now being replanted.
