Voldtofte Lusehøj

Voldtofte Lusehøj submitted by Andy B on 11th Oct 2012. A piece of nettle cloth retrieved from Denmark's richest known Bronze Age burial mound Lusehøj may actually derive from Austria, new findings suggest. 2,800 years ago, one of Denmark's richest and most powerful men died. His body was burned. And the bereaved wrapped his bones in a cloth made from stinging nettle and put them in a stately bronze container, which also functioned as urn. The Calderstones

The Calderstones submitted by Andy B on 6th Sep 2012. John Reppion writes: The plastic sheeting the stones are wrapped in looks like it may have been loosened since the first time I saw it (last month), possibly to let the stones "breathe" a bit more. Nevertheless the conditions seem terribly humid for a fragile prehistoric sandstone monument which is very susceptible to moisture damage. Image copyright John Reppion

Belle Tout Settlement

Belle Tout Settlement submitted by Andy B on 19th Aug 2012. Earthworks, Belle Tout Believed to date from either the late Neolithic or early Bronze Age. The entrenchment is the outer boundary of an enclosure which probably once surrounded the entire hill though now only the north side remains as the rest has long been lost to coastal erosion. Le Pinacle submitted by Andy B on 18th Jul 2012. Jersey must be one of the most concentrated places in Europe for prehistoric sites - I remember, many years ago - around 1951/2, climbing down to the "Pinacle Rock" with a friend who was the grandson of Herbert John Baal, who was the first archivist of those caves. I made this sketch on the way down. Malcolm Reynard http://www.reynard.fr
