Access: Next to a church building just off the A5025 Valley to Cemaes road; clearly visible from the road. Parking a little way to the south in a layby. Near Black Lion pub. Access by a gate.
The stone: I estimated 10 feet tall, covered with lichen.

Log Text: A superb monument set in an exceptional site, in a thinly populated region. It is indeed far from everything, but really worth a visit, being accessible by car on asphalted roads all the way.

The best time for a nice photo would be early morning, when the sun is on the other side.

Log Text: Casiña da Moura has been re-erected here, somewhat arbitrarily, when the dam was built. The choice isn't very happy. In this scarcely populated region, there would have been plenty of suitable isolated spots on the other side of the dam -- and at respectful distance from Casola do Foxo (see separate entry).

Log Text: Little known (so far !) and uneasy to access (see road description posted with main photo), that is precisely a good reason to visit these two dolmens.
One more reason is that the region around Penedono is very rich in ancient monuments, spread over a distance of about 50 km, therefore easily requiring one full day. Add to them all the possible ones still uncharted here.
The Posto de Turismo of Penedono wouldn't know much beyond the sites already listed here.

Log Text: Coordinates 40.973060 -7.39215 are correct as given by Megalhaes.
It stands on the left-hand side of the road from Penedono to Antas, at 2000 m from the castle of Penedono, right at the T-junction with the road towards Ferronha.
Being small (1,90 m high) and thin, Menir de Penedono may be overlooked, but it is otherwise quite visible from the road.
Access to the very foot of the stone : 15 m to walk on wasteland.

Anta do Mezio submitted by Alta-Falisa on 24th Mar 2014. Easy to find along the road N.202 going from Soajo (go and see a curious pillory - signposted "Pelourinho"- in the historic part of the village) to Arcos de Valdevez (a nice larger town).
The Information Center of Mezio, providing info about the Parque Nacional de Peneda-Gérês [PNPG] in general, is just off the right of this photo.

Between AUG.2011 (visit of irishbogman) and MAR.2014, the Mamoa is, luckily, still in the same shape.
Except the small tree, all the invasive vegetation has been cleared to preserve the monument. The Authorities take great care of this patrimonium.
Generally speaking, the local population also is well aware of the historical importance of these monuments and can tell, even several km away, where is what.

After about 2 km going uphill, you'll see the signposts "Estações arqueológicas" (which is the last indication you'll see) and "Centro Hípico", both to the right. I give the distances from here.
After 100 m, take to the left : "Centre Hípico". The Centro Hípico will be on your left after 900 m. The asphalted road ends one hundred meters further and here starts the earth road, all right for a normal car.

On the site, this dolmen is still called Pala da Moura (Visor of the Moorish). Such traditional names (Pala da Moura, or Casa do Mouro, etc.) were or are still in use for many megaliths all over Portugal. If quite acceptable locally in a folkloric context, today they lead to confusion.

Mamoa 3 do Rápido submitted by Alta-Falisa on 25th Mar 2014. Mamoa III do Rápido consists of one excavated dolmen.
As the dolmen still lies in its original pit, the view is not striking, but the architecture of the monument is rather sophisticated. The chamber has no more capstone ; the corridor leading to it has kept two of them. If not outstanding for photographic purposes, this monument is nevertheless a well-preserved and elaborate construction.
