Anta de Santa Marta

Anta de Santa Marta submitted by Alta-Falisa on 26th Mar 2014. Megaliths are more than just stones. This dolmen, sitting on the top a bare hilltop, with a few trees as sentinels and broom all around, is one of the most striking megaliths in the North of Portugal. Photo : March 2014.

Anta de Vilarinho da Castanheira

Anta de Vilarinho da Castanheira submitted by Alta-Falisa on 28th Mar 2014. Anta de Vilarinho da Castanheira. On the site, this dolmen is still called Pala da Moura (Visor of the Moorish). Such traditional names (Pala da Moura, or Casa do Mouro, etc.) were or are still in use for many megaliths all over Portugal. If quite acceptable locally in a folkloric context, today they lead to confusion. Photo taken in March 2014.

Arboretum van Groenendal submitted by Alta-Falisa on 17th Feb 2014. The menhir was created by Richard Viandier (1858-1949), probably around 1920, in honour of Alexandre Dubois (1843-1908), General Director of the Waters and Forests Department and creator of the Arboretum.

The Sonian Forest (Forêt de Soignes, Zoniënwoud), lying at the South-Eastern outskirts of Brussels, is a popular destination any time of the year. To be very precise, this monument lies about 25m inside the region of Brussels...

Casiña da Moura

Date Added: 30th Mar 2014
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: Spain (Galicia)
Visited: Yes on 11th Mar 2014. My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 3 Access 5

Casiña da Moura

Casiña da Moura submitted by Alta-Falisa on 22nd Mar 2014. Casiña da Moura. The car doesn't add much to the photo ; it is meant to show how close you can come by car. The best time for a nice photo would be early morning, when the sun is on the other side. March 2014.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Casiña da Moura has been re-erected here, somewhat arbitrarily, when the dam was built. The choice isn't very happy. In this scarcely populated region, there would have been plenty of suitable isolated spots on the other side of the dam -- and at respectful distance from Casola do Foxo (see separate entry).

Llanrwst Gorsedd Circle

Llanrwst Gorsedd Circle submitted by Alta-Falisa on 30th Mar 2014. Coming as a surprise, ... the modern stones circle of Llanrwst. (Pronouncing the name properly is another matter !) Photo taken in May 2013.

Log Text: Very pleasant to discover, by chance, a crisp new (a mere 60+ yo have I read today...) stones circle, in an agreeable village.

Soar Stone

Date Added: 30th Mar 2014
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir) Country: Wales (Anglesey)

Soar Stone

Soar Stone submitted by TimPrevett on 2nd Jul 2002. Fadog Frech SH319864 Visited Tuesday 15th June 1999 Access: Next to a church building just off the A5025 Valley to Cemaes road; clearly visible from the road. Parking a little way to the south in a layby. Near Black Lion pub. Access by a gate. The stone: I estimated 10 feet tall, covered with lichen.

Log Text: While Soar Stone deserves the same attention as any other menhir, its location along A.5025 isn't flattering.

Menir de Penedono

Menir de Penedono

Menir de Penedono submitted by Magalhaes on 7th May 2006. Site in Central Portugal
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Coordinates 40.973060 -7.39215 are correct as given by Megalhaes.
It stands on the left-hand side of the road from Penedono to Antas, at 2000 m from the castle of Penedono, right at the T-junction with the road towards Ferronha.
Being small (1,90 m high) and thin, Menir de Penedono may be overlooked, but it is otherwise quite visible from the road.
Access to the very foot of the stone : 15 m to walk on wasteland.

Log Text: A superb monument set in an exceptional site, in a thinly populated region. It is indeed far from everything, but really worth a visit, being accessible by car on asphalted roads all the way.

Dólmens de Lapinhas

Date Added: 29th Mar 2014
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: Portugal (Viseu)
Visited: Yes on 15th Mar 2014. My rating: Condition 2 Access 2

Dólmens de Lapinhas

Dólmens de Lapinhas submitted by Alta-Falisa on 27th Mar 2014. Dólmen 1 de Lapinhas, the only one you can see from the road. This photo was taken with a 800 mm lens. March 2014.

Log Text: Little known (so far !) and uneasy to access (see road description posted with main photo), that is precisely a good reason to visit these two dolmens.
One more reason is that the region around Penedono is very rich in ancient monuments, spread over a distance of about 50 km, therefore easily requiring one full day. Add to them all the possible ones still uncharted here.
The Posto de Turismo of Penedono wouldn't know much beyond the sites already listed here.

Mamoa 3 do Rápido

Date Added: 25th Mar 2014
Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: Portugal (Braga)
Visited: Yes on 6th Mar 2014. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 4

Mamoa 3 do Rápido

Mamoa 3 do Rápido submitted by Alta-Falisa on 25th Mar 2014. Mamoa III do Rápido consists of one excavated dolmen. As the dolmen still lies in its original pit, the view is not striking, but the architecture of the monument is rather sophisticated. The chamber has no more capstone ; the corridor leading to it has kept two of them. If not outstanding for photographic purposes, this monument is nevertheless a well-preserved and elaborate construction. Road description : as you will most probably also visit the Dólmen da Portelagem, I start the ro...

Log Text: Very wisely, the excavations have preserved a maximum of the original cairn, thus allowing visitors to imagine how the tomb was built.
