Log Text: Now that excavations have taken place what was originally thought to be a collection of rugge/rugg stones gathered over many hundreds/thousands years of field clearance has been declared to be a chambered tomb over which a 'more modern' (still a couple of hundred years old!) field dry stone wall was built - more detail to follow

Log Text: These stones are really 'Rugg' or 'Rugge' stones i.e. a geological feature - the stones have been collected over many years of field clearance

Chastleton Camp submitted by h_fenton on 22nd Oct 2005. Chastleton Camp from the South-East. 1994
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: I am intrigued as to why this is also called 'Chastleton Barrow' - could 'Barrow' be a corruption of 'Bury' (in the local dialect where there 'y' is not pronounced) - and it is still populated by horses -

Stow Camp

Stow Camp submitted by 4clydesdale7 on 9th Apr 2012. The development of the NE side of Stow on the Wold comes right up to the edge - the Wells are out of shot to the left across a deep valley/combe - the the Fosse Way is some 200m behind the camera.

(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Barrow is badly pitted but set in a beautiful spot near to a 'castellated' barn - the nearby village Didmarton (with the deserted old parish of Oldbury-on -the-hill) has much to offer
