Log Text: The Jury has to be out on this site - there are technically three different 'Camps' at Lansdown all within 500m of each other - only Little Down Camp to the west impresses -

Chastleton Camp

Date Added: 10th Apr 2012
Site Type: Hillfort Country: England (Oxfordshire)

Chastleton Camp submitted by h_fenton on 22nd Oct 2005. Chastleton Camp from the South-East. 1994
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: I am intrigued as to why this is also called 'Chastleton Barrow' - could 'Barrow' be a corruption of 'Bury' (in the local dialect where there 'y' is not pronounced) - and it is still populated by horses -

Goose Stones

Date Added: 10th Apr 2012
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir) Country: England (Oxfordshire)
Visited: Yes on 8th Apr 2012. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 3

Goose Stones

Goose Stones submitted by hamish on 26th Jan 2007. There are quite a lot of large "Sarsen" type stones here, all possible remnants of neolithic structures.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: These stones are really 'Rugg' or 'Rugge' stones i.e. a geological feature - the stones have been collected over many years of field clearance

Site Type: Burial Chamber or Dolmen Country: England (Oxfordshire)
Visited: Yes on 8th Apr 2012. My rating: Condition 2 Ambience 3 Access 4

Burnt Hill Dolmen

Burnt Hill Dolmen submitted by hamish on 4th Apr 2006. We went looking for a Tumulus on our way to Adlestrop Hill. it was pretty well wrecked. There was supposed to be a Standing Stone which may be this.
(View photo, vote or add a comment)

Log Text: Now that excavations have taken place what was originally thought to be a collection of rugge/rugg stones gathered over many hundreds/thousands years of field clearance has been declared to be a chambered tomb over which a 'more modern' (still a couple of hundred years old!) field dry stone wall was built - more detail to follow

The Queen Stone

Date Added: 12th Jun 2012
Site Type: Standing Stone (Menhir) Country: England (Herefordshire)
Visited: Visited (still working on). My rating: Condition 4 Ambience 4 Access 3

Log Text: This Stone is something of an enigma - there is no good reason for it being where it is - it is however worth that 'little bit extra' to get close to - the markings are quite extraordinary - was there any human influence on its placement?

The Golden Well (Dorstone)

The Golden Well (Dorstone) submitted by AJHL on 18th Feb 2023. The Golden Well. The bullrushes grow out of the pool which is overgrown and difficult to see. But you will know it when you suddenly drop in to it like I did! Thankfully no giant carp in sight.

Starveall

Starveall submitted by TheCaptain on 29th Mar 2004. Starveall Barrow, South Gloucestershire, ST794879, March 2004. View looking west at the barrows east side. The ploughed field surrounding the barrow is eating away at it. The most recent ploughing must have taken a couple of feet from each end, with all the stones which formerly made up the mound being scattered across the field.

Log Text: This came as an awful shock - I have an idea that there was muddled thinking by local government - and we have the gall to criticise 19th century tomb hunters
