Hangman's Stone (Northleach)

Hangman's Stone (Northleach) submitted by thecaptain on 14th Jan 2007. Is this the remains of a burial chamber from a longbarrow ? Is it a fallen menhir ? Is it a more modern boundary stone ? Is it the remnants of a hangmans gibbet ? I don't know, but to me it could easily be the remains of a burial chamber.

Log Text: I am intrigued as to why this is also called 'Chastleton Barrow' - could 'Barrow' be a corruption of 'Bury' (in the local dialect where there 'y' is not pronounced) - and it is still populated by horses -

Log Text: Now that excavations have taken place what was originally thought to be a collection of rugge/rugg stones gathered over many hundreds/thousands years of field clearance has been declared to be a chambered tomb over which a 'more modern' (still a couple of hundred years old!) field dry stone wall was built - more detail to follow
