The Grickstone

The Grickstone submitted by TheCaptain on 13th Apr 2004. Nice standing stone to the south of Grickstone farm, beside a footpath at the corner of a small wood. The stone has about 6 foot in length above ground, but due to the angle at which it leans, is only about 4 feet high. Nicely decorated with lichens. South Gloucestershire, ST777828.

Log Text: Worth the extra effort - footpath quite heavily overgrown

Horton Camp

Date Added: 24th Aug 2011
Site Type: Hillfort Country: England (Gloucestershire)
Visited: Yes on 24th Aug 2011. My rating: Condition 3 Ambience 4 Access 4

Horton Camp

Horton Camp submitted by TheCaptain on 29th Mar 2004. Horton Camp Hillfort, South Gloucestershire, ST765845, March 2004. View looking northwest along the remaining bank across the top of the hill. There is no sign of a ditch. The "inside" of the camp is to the left. I may well be wrong, but I think that this bank may be a former internal division of what was once a much bigger camp taking in the entire promontary, not just the southern end.

Log Text: Wonderful views from SW round to NW with Drakestone Point and Brackenbury Ditches easily made out but why are Horton and Sodbury Camps so close to each other (1.5km) - Sodbury has larger earthworks Horton has the Cotswold Scarp

Old Sodbury

Old Sodbury submitted by Thorgrim on 18th Oct 2003. The internal banks and ditches are rectangular with rounded corners, very like the layout of Roman forts. This suggests that a Roman fort has been added to an earlier one.

Log Text: I am uncomfortable with the suggestion that this could be pre-Roman

Log Text: There is more to this site than the fact that it is of Roman design and build - like Sodbury there could well have been an Iron Age Fort previously

Farmcote gatepost

Farmcote gatepost submitted by h_fenton on 31st Aug 2008. An old stone gatepost(?- no hinges) at Farmcote in Gloucestershire (Cotswolds near Winchcombe). Most stone gateposts across the cotswolds are square in section c.40x40cm and stand upto 1.5metres high with a rounded top. This gatepost is unusual, in that it is a rough triangular shaped stone which has then been extensively carved and shaped on three sides, with recesses that suggest it had wooden posts tightly against it, plus some small rectangular sockets of unknown function. There are also som...
