Getting closer, the peculiar cast iron 'bowl' (the cap for an old pump?) can be seen to the left hand side of the well.  Thinking this was a drinking bucket for cattle/sheep, I tried to overturn it to look closer, only to find it was deeply embedded in the ground, and very heavily constructed.
