I thought I would step in, after what I saw last week, and was
horrified by what is both proposed, and the utter failure of the local
curators to stop it - indeed the posting on Britarch of what the county
archaeologist was claiming was extraordinary. Jan tells me he has
hardly visited the site, and really seems to be belittling everything
that is claimed. I saw the ripon gazette stuff, and was doing this from
memory - thanks for the url.
Have a look at the BBC discussion board (Talk archaeology) for some
anonomous rants about the proposals. We have quite a fan club here, and
when the programme goes out, we might help with the odd million
signatures on the petition.
Meanwhile, if there is anything I can do to help. We are up again in
Ripon next week, filming a programme about monks - by chance.
