I was fortunate to be a student of Aubrey Burl when he was a lecturer in Pre History at Hull College of Education. Those four years were the most imformative and enjoyable in all my years in education. Aubery took his students to many of the well known prehistorical sites in England and Scotland. At Fockaburs in North East Scotland we spent weeks on a dig of a Neolithic Burial Mound discovering four well preserved skeletons....at the end of each day and before an excellent dinner cooked by his wife in camp he would take us to the local pub overlooking the sea and put £20 note on the table for a round of drinks for all. At Stonehenge he captured the absolute feeling of the place to the extent that we were joined by a group of Americans who left their guide to listen to Aubery taking us back thousands of years with the magic of his description of those times.
